BN wins Hulu Selangor by 1,725 votes

KUALA KUBU BARU: Barisan Nasional won the Hulu Selangor parliamentary seat by a 1,725-vote majority on Sunday.

P. Kamalanathan garnered 24,997 votes to defeat PKR's Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, who got 23,272 votes.

There were 731 spoilt votes, of the total of 48,935 votes cast. Voter turnout was 75.87%.

The result was announced at 9.17pm by returning officer Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan.

Prime Minister and Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who was at the tallying centre when the result was announced, said the victory showed the tide was changing for Barisan and that the people were returning to the coalition.

In his victory speech, Kamalanathan, 44, vowed to work hard to resolve the problems of the various races in Hulu Selangor.

"I will keep to the promises made when I campaigned," the MIC information chief said.

He thanked Najib, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu and leaders of other component and friendly parties of Barisan who campaigned for him.

In the 2008 general elections, PKR's Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Ahmad defeated MIC deputy president Datuk G. Palanivel by 198 votes to win the seat.

KUALA KUBU BARU: A total of 48,935 voters or 75.87% of the electorate cast their votes in the Hulu Selangor parliamentary by-election Sunday, Election Commission deputy chairman Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said.

He said the result could be announced at 10pm, provided all the ballot boxes from the 48 polling centres could be brought to the tallying centre here by 8.30pm and the tallying was completed in one hour.

He said the EC was generally satisfied with the polling process though it had originally anticipated an 80% turnout.

"Heavy rain fell in Batang Kali and several other places this evening, and some voters could not have gone to the polls.

"Nevertheless, we are happy with the 75.87% turnout," he said.

The number of voters was higher than the 47,622 or 75.24% turnout during the general election in 2008.

6.30pm: Ballot boxes are being brought to the tallying centre.

5.45pm: Voter turnout was 75.87% or 48,935 people. The result is expected about 9.30pm.

5.20pm: Police have set up barbed-wire barricades on the road leading to the tallying centre at the Hulu Selangor multi-purpose sports complex. On standby are 10 policemen.

5pm: Voting has closed and the total turnout is expected to be known in 30 minutes. Counting will begin immediately at the polling centres. The results will be tabulated at the Hulu Selangor multi-purpose sports complex.

4.30pm: Voter turnout at 4pm was 73.82% or 47,615 people.

3.30pm: Voter turnout at 3pm was 67.18% or 43,333 people.

2.40pm: Police said they have arrested six 'outsiders' for trying to disrupt the peace at a few polling centres.

2.32pm: Voter turnout at 2pm was 63.74%. Based on the voting trend, which picked up after the lunch break, voter turnout may be better than the 75.24% in the last general election, EC says.

1.55pm: Muhyiddin urged voters who have yet to vote to come out quickly ahead of possible showers soon. After visiting a number of polling centres, he also said that both the police and EC had done a good job as voting was proceeding smoothly.

1.40pm: Police deny claims that they detained buses carrying phantom voters. They say the voting process is going smoothly, except for minor fracas among supporters.

1.35pm: Voter turnout at 1pm is 56.92%

12.35pm: Midday voter turnout is 49.04% or 31,632 out of 63,701 voters.

12.05pm: Almost all roads in the towns in the constituency are now clogged, slowing voters making their way to the polling centres.

11.30am: EC says 38.21% of voters had cast their ballots by 11am. Voting is proceeding smoothly, barring minor incidents.

11.15am: The oldest voter registered at Ladang Kerling, Marzuki@Chuki Ahmad, 97, votes at SK Kerling. When asked which side he is voting for, he smiled and said "the best candidate".

11.00am: Zaid, who is also not a registered voter in the constituency, is making his meet-and-greet rounds and was in Batang Kali earlier this morning.

10.45am By 10am, 26.25% had cast their votes.

10.30am: Barisan deputy chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is on the ground, greeting voters and supporters and checking on Barisan machinery.

10.20am: Voting at all polling centres is proceeding smoothly.

9.50am: Election fever is on but supporters from both parties are heeding police advice. They drive by and tease each other playfully. Atmosphere is festive.

HULU SELANGOR: Voting has begun for the Hulu Selangor parliamentary seat by-election.

The result of the battle to win the hearts and minds of the voters scattered in a constituency as huge as Malacca and bordering Perak and Pahang is expected to be known after 8pm.

Voters are going to 48 centres located in 47 schools and a community hall to mark their choice of candidate - MIC information chief P. Kamalanathan, 44, of the Barisan Nasional or former Kota Baru MP and former minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, 59, of PKR.

Polling will end at 5pm.

Some 799 postal voters, comprising police and military personnel and election workers, cast their ballots on Thursday and Friday.

The seat fell vacant following the death of the MP, Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Ahmad of PKR, in March. Nomination was held on April 17.

Dr Zainal Abidin won the seat in the 2008 general election with a 198-vote majority after beating MIC deputy president Datuk G. Palanivel who had held the seat for four terms.

The constituency has a total of 64,500 voters, 34,020 or 52.7% of whom are Malays, 16,964 or 26.3% Chinese, 12,453 or 19.3% Indians and about 1,000 Orang Asli.

The Election Commission (EC) is using the 2009 electoral rolls, updated as of March 26, for the by-election.

The police have deployed more than 1,000 personnel and several helicopters to ensure a smooth campaign and polling.

Kamalanathan for Hulu Selangor by-election

KUALA KUBU BARU: MIC information chief P. Kamalanathan is the Barisan Nasional candidate for the Hulu Selangor by-election, Barisan deputy chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced Thursday.

Muhyiddin, who is the Deputy Prime Minister, made the announcement at the Barisan command centre for the by-election at Bukit Sentosa, near here.

"The choice was based on what the people in Hulu Selangor wanted. They wanted change," he said.

He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had called him from the United States on Thursday morning, and told him that the Barisan machinery must work hard to win the by-election for the parliamentary seat.

Earlier in the day, the MIC agreed to field Kamalanathan (pic) as the Barisan candidate for the parliamentary seat.

Source said party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu met Muhyiddin to endorse MIC deputy president Datuk G. Palanivel as the sole candidate for the seat but Muhyiddin had objected, saying that reports from the ground were not favourable to Palanivel.

"Muhyiddin had inquired about MIC youth deputy chief V. Mugilan for the seat but Samy Vellu objected strongly, saying that Mugilan was unacceptable as he had betrayed the interest of the party," said a source.

Sources added that Samy Vellu had also indicated that the MIC was prepared to give the seat to Umno if Palanivel was not chosen.

Samy Vellu later received a call from Muhyiddin, asking him to consider Kamalanathan as a candidate and for Palanivel to be appointed a Senator and later made a deputy minister.

At the three-hour emergency central working committee meeting on Wednesday night at the MIC headquarters, it was unanimously decided that Palanivel should be the candidate and those who were offered the seat had agreed to reject it.

Kamalanathan, 44, is a public relations manager who is married to S. Shobana, a senior public relations manager at a private hospital.

He started his career as a clerical staff in Associated Pan Malaysia Cement Sdn Bhd in 1985 before becoming a public relation officer with Malaysian Palm Oil Promotion Council for six years. He was the Public Relations Manager for Carotino and another government owned company from 2001.

He obtained his certificate in public relations from the London Chambers of Commerce and Industry in England and also a diploma in language translation (Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka), Public Relations (Institute of Public Relations), and Bachelors in Mass Communications from Edith Cowan University in Australia.

Kamalanathan was a Selayang municipal councillor from 2004 to 2006 and the national coordinator for Putera MIC and party information chief since last year.

PM announces cabinet committee on youth

The cabinet has agreed to the establishment of a Cabinet Committee on Youth Development which will play an important role in coordinating and updating the delivery system for youth
development programmes.

Prime Minister Najib Razak said in a statement here today that the committee would be chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and would have 12 members comprising representatives from the relevant ministries.

It would not only meet the current needs and aspirations but would also ensure that the young generation was more productive in the country's socio-economic development in future, he said.

The committee would also undertake various initiatives to mold today's young generation to play an important role in continuing with the nation building agenda towards a brighter and more prosperous future, he added.

Najib said the committee would be able to contribute various reforms in efforts to develop the young generation of 11.4 million people aged between 15 and 40.

"Among the changes that will be given focu,s are the youth development management mechanism and the implementation of the Youth Association and Youth Development Act 2007 (Act 688)," he said.

Improve coordination of youth agencies

Besides comprehensive implementation of all the youth development policies, he said, efforts would also be made to improve the coordination and cooperation among the relevant youth agencies.

Najib said the governemnt would also continue to help the youth to enjoy the the country's development, strengthen the spirit of patriotism, and make the 1Malaysia concept a culture, besides developing the spirit of entrepreneurship, producing a crime-free youth and enhancing the role of the youth in promoting peace and national resilience and in championing universal values.

He said that with the committee, the functions and roles among government agencies involved in youth development could be coordinated to ensure that the key performance indicators (KPI) for youth development could be achieved before 2012.

"The government thanks all parties who have given suggestions for the setting up of this committee, especially those from the youth leaders at various levels, the Malaysian Youth Council and the National Youth Consultative Council," he said.

He said the ideas and contributions of the cabinet committee members would create a new era of youth development management in the country with big changes in the aspects of responsibility, system and role extension.

"The government believes that the youth will enjoy the benefits and wider development," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: A fully-fledged Indian Cultural Centre (ICC), mooted by the Indian Government in 2003, is now up and running here.

Located in CapSquare, Jalan Munshi Abdullah, it offers an interesting range of cultural services.

The centre was jointly opened on Thursday by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) president Dr Karan Singh and Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam, who is the MIC vice-president.

Also present was the High Commissioner-designate of India to Malaysia, Vijay K. Gokhale.

Focus on saving the babies

PETALING JAYA: Long-term measures should be drawn up to prevent the abandonment of babies, says MIC deputy president Datuk G. Palanivel

He said that a committed approach to the problem, backed by adequate funds, should result in a reduction in the number of abandoned babies.

“Proactive outreach programmes that educate and help in preventing unwanted pregnancies are very important,” said Palanivel in his blog (www.gpalanivel.com).

“A good approach is to set up a system where these mothers can be dealt with anonymously and should not be threatened with prosecution,” he said, adding that counselling and assistance should be provided.

He said the government should ensure that this message reaches out to women in trouble, especially those with unplanned pregnancies.

“Personnel should be trained to look out for these mothers in very discreet ways,” he added.

On Saturday, the charred remains of a baby, believed to be a few days old, was found in a rubbish bin in Kuala Krai, Kelantan, by two District Council workers while on their garbage rounds along Jalan Tengku Zainal Abidin at about 11am.

This was the fourth case involving the dumping of newborn babies since Feb 8.

Palanivel said that the National Population and Family Development Board clinics, government primary health clinics, district hospitals, private hospitals, 24-hour clinics and government-run welfare homes should also be accessible to mothers who might be considering abandoning their babies.

“It is more important to save a baby’s life than to prosecute the mother who abandons her baby,” he stressed.

Saravanan: Bring back sports glory days of Indians

MIC vice-president Datuk M. Saravanan urged Indians to bring back the golden era of 1960s and 1970s when the community excelled in many different sporting arenas, reported Tamil Nesan.

He said that back then many Indians represented the country overseas. Saravanan told reporters after opening a seven-a-side football tournament organised by the MIC Gelang Patah division in Skudai last Sunday.He said more youths should be active in sports to become successful like Dr M. Jegathesan in athletics and goalkeeper Arumugam in football.
He said that while Malaysian Indians had been giving priority to education and economic stability, they should not neglect sports.

Saravanan, who is also Deputy Federal Territories Minister, urged Indian sports organisations to hold more competitions and identify talented athletes so they could be given training and guidance to excel.

Inilah sasaran dan keutamaan kami. Kami mahu bekerja lebih kuat untuk masyarakat India dan rakyat keseluruhan.

Adakah Datuk Seri yakin barisan pemimpin yang memenangi pemilihan itu akan mampu merealisasikan harapan MIC dan masyarakat India?

Saya sangat yakin. Lagipun para perwakilan sedar bahawa kumpulan ini mampu meneruskan agenda parti. Kita perlukan darah muda. Bukan sahaja muda, tetapi berpelajaran tinggi. Mereka akan mengemudi kapal (MIC) ke satu perairan baru. Telah tiba masanya untuk mereka mengambil alih dan meneruskan perjuangan kami. Itulah harapan masyarakat dan saya sendiri.
Tetapi nasihat saya kepada mereka ialah sentiasa mengutamakan rintihan masyarakat. Tangisan mereka mesti diatasi dan diganti dengan keceriaan.
Ada yang menganggap MIC masih berdepan kemelut politik walaupun selepas pemilihan.
Itu hanya taktik atau gimik politik pihak tertentu. Pihak yang tidak dapat menerima keputusan perwakilan. Mereka ini tidak mahu menghormati demokrasi dan ingin menghancurkan parti. Namun sebagai presiden parti, saya serta ahli-ahli lain akan memastikan MIC terus kukuh.
Kami tidak akan teragak-agak mengambil tindakan mengikut Perlembagaan MIC ke atas pihak yang mahu menghancurkan parti. Kita tidak akan biarkan ini berlaku. Ketika saya mengambil alih kepimpinan MIC pada 1979, wujud banyak puak dan pertelagahan dalam parti. Ramai yang masih ingat bagaimana MIC dikaitkan dengan insiden baling kerusi semasa mesyuarat. Kini semua itu tiada lagi kerana MIC sudah bersatu padu dan stabil.

Bagaimanakah hubungan MIC dengan BN? Adakah MIC akan terus relevan mengikut perkembangan semasa?

Adakah anda fikir hubungan ini rapuh atau dapat dipisahkan oleh mana-mana pihak? Jawapannya tidak! MIC akan tetap dengan BN. Sokongan MIC akan tetap untuk BN, tidak boleh dipisahkan.
Ketika Rumah Terbuka Deepavali MIC pada 17 Oktober lalu, saya telah berbincang dengan Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak mengenai pelbagai isu berkaitan masyarakat India. Beliau menyatakan, beliau faham keadaan masyarakat India dan apa yang perlu dibuat. Kita berkongsi idea. Beliau terbuka dan sanggup mendengar keluhan semua pihak.
Saya ingin menegaskan bahawa tidak ada mana-mana pihak yang dapat mengambil alih peranan MIC sebagai parti yang memperjuangkan nasib orang India di negara ini. Saya mengaku MIC mempunyai kelemahan tetapi kami sedang dan akan terus memperbaikinya.

Bagaimana pula dengan proses peralihan kuasa dalam MIC?

Proses peralihan akan tetap berlaku. Saya telah pun mengenal pasti pemimpin-pemimpin yang akan meneruskan perjuangan parti. Saya telah membuat keputusan mengenai bilakah peralihan kuasa ini. Bagaimanapun saya mempunyai beberapa perkara penting yang perlu dilaksanakan sebelum saya berundur.
Ada orang menganggap saya ingin memegang kuasa selama-lamanya. Itu tidak betul. Saya lebih pentingkan kestabilan dalam parti. Saya mahu menyelesaikan beberapa perkara terlebih dahulu. Tetapi ia tidak bermakna tidak ada pemimpin lain yang dapat menanganinya. Saya cuma ingin meninggalkan MIC dalam keadaan yang kukuh.

Jadi, Datuk Seri masih belum memutuskan tarikh sebenar untuk berundur?

Saya sudah ada tempohnya tetapi belum boleh diberitahu sekarang. Saya akan memaklumkan Perdana Menteri mengenainya sebelum membuat pengumuman.

Tetapi adakah pengunduran itu akan dibuat selepas Pilihan Raya Umum ke-13 nanti?

Tidak. Jauh sebelum pilihan raya itu. Sebelum PRU 13. Saya tidak akan berundur hanya selepas Parlimen dibubarkan seperti dakwaan sesetengah pihak.
Saya yakin apabila saya berundur pada tempoh yang ditetapkan itu, saya telah meninggalkan barisan pemimpin yang mampu membawa hala tuju MIC mengikut kesesuaian masa. Saya yakin barisan yang dipilih oleh perwakilan itu mampu melakukannya.

Mampukah MIC mengembalikan keyakinan dan sokongan masyarakat India? Mampukah MIC membantu memenangkan BN pada PRU 13 nanti?

Saya yakin kita mampu. Kita harus melihat semula sejarah. Dalam kesemua PRU, hanya PRU 12 yang melihat pengundi India beralih sokongan. Pada PRU 12, ramai pengundi India memutuskan untuk tidak menyokong BN. Ini tidak bermakna mereka menyokong pembangkang tetapi mereka cuma ingin menyuarakan perasaan tidak puas hati.
Saya tidak berhasrat untuk menuding jari kepada sesiapa kerana ia tidak menguntungkan. Hakikatnya setiap kali MIC mengemukakan cadangan kepada kerajaan untuk meningkatkan taraf hidup masyarakat India, masih ramai yang berpendapat ia tidak mencukupi.
Sewaktu kepimpinan Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, diwujudkan Jawatankuasa Khas Kabinet untuk masyarakat India atas usaha MIC. Beberapa pembaharuan lain turut dilakukan. Kesannya hanya dapat dirasai kebelakangan ini.
Contoh terbaik ialah sokongan hampir 70 peratus pengundi India kepada BN pada Pilihan Raya Kecil Bagan Pinang baru-baru ini.

Apakah langkah-langkah yang telah dan sedang diambil oleh MIC dalam usaha mengembalikan sokongan masyarakat India kepada parti dan BN?

Kami sedang membuat perubahan dan reformasi. Transformasi ini melibatkan membawa masuk pemimpin-pemimpin muda dan kerjasama erat dengan badan bukan kerajaan (NGO). Pindaan juga dibuat kepada Perlembagaan MIC supaya ia lebih responsif kepada tuntutan semasa. Ia bukan perubahan kosmetik tetapi nyata.
Pada awal tahun depan, kita akan melaksanakan Indeks Prestasi Utama (KPI) ke atas semua pemimpin cawangan dan bahagian. Kita mahu lebih pentingkan kualiti. Kita mahu melihat sejauh mana masyarakat India berpuas hati dengan khidmat MIC.
Tidak guna laungan MIC untuk masyarakat India tetapi kerja dan khidmat tidak dilaksanakan dengan cekap. Moto kita harus selaras dengan konsep "Rakyat Didahulukan. Pencapaian Diutamakan."
Bagaimana pula usaha menarik sokongan masyarakat India di bandar kepada MIC?
Banyak. MIC juga berusaha menyegarkan parti dengan usaha menarik lebih ramai ahli muda. Kita mahu setiap cawangan dan bahagian mempunyai pemimpin pelapis muda yang juga berpendidikan. Kita mahu semua peringkat umur dan apa juga taraf pendidikan mendekati MIC.

Apakah komen terhadap 'musuh-musuh' politik yang tak henti-henti menghentam kepimpinan Datuk Seri?

Dalam politik, seseorang pemimpin terpaksa berdepan 'penyakit' ini (musuh-musuh politik). Ia sesuatu yang lumrah. Saya sudah lebih 40 tahun dalam politik tetapi kita tetap perlu berwaspada.
Kita perlu memberi penerangan kepada ahli-ahli mengenai kebenaran. Usaha ini sedang dibuat melalui pelbagai cara. Itulah cara yang terbaik.
Persepsi adalah penting kerana walaupun penerangan diberi tetapi persepsi ahli-ahli masih sama, tidak akan ada kesannya. Saya sedar 'musuh-musuh' ini cuba mengapi-apikan ahli dan kerana itu, kita perlu bertegas agar mereka ini tidak berjaya memusnahkan parti.

Adakah Datuk Seri melihat kewujudan parti-parti politik India yang lain mengancam kewujudan MIC?

Jika kita kuat, mengapa kita perlu rasa takut? MIC masih kuat dan stabil. Ini fakta. MIC mempunyai lebih 630,000 ahli. Kita akan melancarkan bancian untuk mengenal pasti jumlah sebenar keahlian.
Ini bermakna kita akan pastikan apakah jumlah ini tidak beralih ke mana-mana (parti politik) dan kita juga mahu menambahkan jumlah keahlian ini.
MIC tidak perlu bimbang dengan kewujudan parti-parti politik India lain. Mereka datang dan pergi, tetapi MIC untuk selama-lamanya. Kita telah bertahan sejak 63 tahun. Cuma apa yang menjadi kebimbangan saya ialah mungkin akan wujud perpecahan dalam masyarakat India. Populasi kita hanya 1.7 juta.
Tetapi ramai pula mahu menubuhkan parti walaupun sedar mereka mungkin tiada sokongan. Namun MIC sedia bekerjasama dengan mana-mana pihak yang sanggup mengutamakan kepentingan masyarakat India.

Bagaimana dengan kecenderungan parti-parti kecil masyarakat India yang cuba menyertai BN? Adakah Datuk Seri merasakan ia satu ancaman?

Tidak, ia bukan ancaman. Isu ini sudah lama dan MIC telah memberikan pandangan. Dahulu sewaktu zaman Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad mahu terima IPF ke dalam BN, saya kata kepada beliau bahawa sekiranya IPF diterima ia seolah-olah memberi lampu hijau kepada banyak pihak untuk menubuhkan parti dan memohon untuk menyertai BN.
Masalahnya mereka tidak mempunyai hubungan kuat dengan masyarakat atau akar umbi. Saya menentangnya, mungkin sebab itulah Dr. Mahathir 'hati panas' dengan saya.
Tetapi mungkin kali ini, Perdana Menteri sekarang mempunyai alternatif untuk menangani masalah itu. Terpulanglah kepada beliau.
Pada saya MIC sudah mempunyai struktur yang sempurna, mempunyai hubungan rapat dengan rakyat berbanding parti lain kerana mereka perlu berusaha mendapat keahlian.

Adakah Datuk Seri cuba mengatakan MIC masih relevan dengan masyarakat India?

Ya, memang betul, MIC masih relevan. Apabila orang datang berjumpa MIC meminta pertolongan bermakna dia telah berjumpa dengan BN yang merupakan kerajaan. Hasrat mereka akan mudah disalurkan kerana MIC berada dalam kerajaan.

Datuk Seri akan bersara walaupun enggan mengatakan tarikh sebenar ketika ini. Apakah yang akan Datuk Seri lakukan selepas bersara nanti?

Saya akan melakukan kerja-kerja sosial. Bekerjasama dengan NGO dan menggunakan sepenuhnya pengalaman untuk berkongsi mesej dan usaha membantu rakyat.
Sekarang pun saya dan juga MIC bekerjasama erat dengan banyak NGO tetapi apabila bersara nanti saya akan menjadi freelance activist.
Bantuan ini bukan hanya untuk masyarakat India sahaja tetapi semua orang. Semua akan dibantu kerana semuanya adalah rakyat Malaysia yang perlu dibantu.

MIC info chief: We've stood the test of time

Giving birth to new political parties is an easy task but nurturing and taking care of them is a different ball game altogether.

And this is why newly appointed MIC information chief P Kamalanathan believes that his party would be able to weather the storm while the rest fade into oblivion.

"It is easy to form a party but it is tough to maintain it. MIC has been around since 1946," he told Malaysiakini during a recent interview.

"I remember DMIP (Democratic Malaysian Indian Party) was formed in the 1980s by V Govindaraju but it was not sustainable.

"Similarly Hindraf is breaking up from within," he pointed out.

Kamalanathan, who is still co-ordinator of MIC's Putera wing, said his first task in his new role would be to ensure that the party is ready to face the new media and social networking sites.

"I am going to establish real communication between the party, members and BN government. A new public relations committee would be formed for party re-branding and damage control purposes.

"We would establish a new committee that would look into establishing media relations," added the 43-year-old public relations manager and part-time lecturer who joined MIC 25 years ago.

Delegates, not Dr M who decides

Meanwhile, the information chief also politely told former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad to keep out of his party's affairs, especially concerning president S Samy Vellu.

While stressing that MIC looked up to Mahathir, he however reminded the 84-year-old statesman that it was the MIC delegates who decide who their leader should be.

"He has a right to give comments but party members are also clever enough to decide who they want as president.

"The president (Samy Vellu) is not going to seek re-election in 2012. Every party has its own way to resolve internal issues," he said.

Kamalanathan also defended MIC's decision to take action against former vice-president V Govindaraju on the grounds that he defamed Samy Vellu.

"You cannot hit people below the belt. You cannot defame another individual. Party elections do not give the right to defame someone," he added.

On the claim by Govindaraju that he assisted Samy Vellu to win in the party elections some three decades back by 'stealing votes', Kamalanathan wondered why the veteran never disclosed this before.

"What is his intention? Why didn't he say that when he was dismissed from the party in the 1980s?" he asked, adding that all claims must be substantiated with evidence.

MIC is contemplating filing a civil suit against Govindaraju.

Kamalanathan also added that the newly elected central working committee (CWC) members would hold their first meet on Sept 29, and S Subramaniam was on the agenda.

Subramaniam, who was defeated in the race for number two during the party's Sept 12 annual general meeting, was said to have brought a large number of outsiders, especially youths, to the event.

Subramaniam could be given the boot following the accusation that he had brought the party to disrepute.

Putera MIC hosts buka puasa do

THE Negri Sembilan Putera MIC organised a buka puasa function with the children from the Aminan Orphanage at Ampangan, Seremban, recently.

Its chairman, Dr S. Thinagaraj said hosting the breaking of fast event was the wing’s new approach to promote the 1Malaysia concept introduced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said the event would help the different communities to understand and respect each other’s cultures as well remove any racial prejudices.

“We should use this holy month of Ramadan to know our Muslim brothers better especially since we live in a multiracial community,” Thinagaraj said.

He congratulated Putera MIC head of Rasah/ Seremban, R. Dineshwaran for putting the event together.

Dineshwaran said more of such of activities would be held throughout Ramadan.

“We are willing to accept buka puasa invitations from any government or non-government organisations to foster good relations with everyone,” he added.

The caretaker of the Aminan Orphanage in Ampangan, Kamarul Ariffin, thanked the Putera MIC members for the invitation.

“This is the first time an Indian organisation has come forth to host a buka puasa function with us. We should this kind of activity that will unite us and make the 1Malaysia concept a success,” added Kamarul.

Symptom	Cold	Swine Flu

Scholarship - Young Leaders Program (YLP) - The Embassy of Japan

The Japanese Government Scholarship for the Young Leaders' Program
(YLP) is open until 23 September 2009 for Malaysian Nationals like to
pursue Master's Degree Courses in Japan. During the term of the
scholarship, a monthly allowance of approximately 258,000 yen (subject
to change) will be given. Fees for the entrance examination,
matriculation and tuition at the university will be exempted. A round
trip airplane ticket is also provided.

Course duration is principally one year from September 2010 to August

SCHOLARSHIP:Biasiswa Yang Di-Pertuan Agong 2009

Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam Malaysia (JPA) sukacita memaklumkan bahawa Kerajaan telah bersetuju untuk meneruskan pelaksanaan program pencapaian Biasiswa Yang di-Pertuan Agong yang telah mula diperkenalkan pada tahun 2006. Program penajaan ini adalah khusus kepada calon yang mempunyai prestasi akademik dan bukan akademik (ko-kurikulum) yang amat cemerlang untuk melanjutkan pelajaran di peringkat Sarjana dan Kedoktoran (Ph.D) di dalam atau di luar negara.

Bilangan biasiswa yang ditetapkan pada tahun ini adalah sebanyak 12 tempat iaitu enam untuk peringkat Sarjana dan enam untuk peringkat Ph.D untuk calon mengikuti pengajian dalam bidang Sains dan Teknologi, Ekonomi dan Undang-undang.

Tujuan utama biasiswa ini adalah untuk mengiktiraf kebolehan amat cemerlang seseorang calon dengan memberi peluang meneruskan pengajian ke peringkat yang lebih tinggi. Pada masa yang sama, program ini merupakan satu bentuk pelaburan pembangunan modal insan yang akan menyumbang kepada pembangunan negara.

Keutamaan adalah kepada calon yang mendapat keputusan akademik yang amat cemerlang di peringkat Ijazah Sarjana Muda/Sarjana dan mempunyai keupayaan yang luar biasa seperti penguasaan pelbagai bahasa, kebolehan yang istimewa, aktif dalam aktiviti kemasyarakatan atau menghasilkan kerja-kerja kreatif dan inovatif, serta mendapat tempat di institusi pengajian tinggi awam tempatan atau di universiti terkemuka dunia (Ivy League) dan setara. Calon-calon yang layak dan berjaya disenarai pendek akan melalui proses pemilihan termasuk temuduga.

Secara spesifik, syarat-syarat kelayakan adalah seperti berikut:

Warganegara Malaysia;
Berumur tidak melebihi 30 tahun pada tahun memulakan pengajian;
Memiliki Ijazah Sarjana Muda/Sarjana yang diiktiraf oleh Kerajaan dengan pencapaian CGPA minimum 3.75 atau kelas pertama atau setaraf dengannya;

PM’s wife praises Tamil schools

HE achievements of Tamil school pupils in the UPSR examinations has earned the praise of Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Malaysia Nanban reported.

The Prime Minister’s wife said 719 pupils obtained 7As this year compared to only 45 in 1999, adding that this was “a tremendous improvement”.

She praised efforts and guidance carried out by the Sri Murugan Centre, Tamil Foundation, voluntary and social organisations, teachers and parents.

The Education Ministry has said that it is taking the necessary action to ensure that all teachers in the schools undergo the necessary teachers training before being posted.

SEREMBAN: Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk T. Murugiah has been told not to take credit for trying to relocate a Tamil school in Lukut as the MIC was handling the problem.

Negri Sembilan MIC chairman Datuk T. Rajagopalu said Murugiah should check with the party rather than give the wrong impression by expressing shock when he visited SJK(T) Ladang Sungai Salak which is operating from two rented double-storey shoplots.

He said the party had laid the groundwork to relocate the school to a nearby land acquired by the Education Ministry for RM1.5mil.

He added that MIC secretary-general Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam, who is also the Human Resources Minister, had already spoken to Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on the matter.

It was reported that Murugiah, who made an unscheduled stop at the school on Tuesday, was dismayed to see the pupils studying in cramped conditions in the shoplots, adding that he would raise the matter with Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.

Rajagopalu said that the school headmaster S. Krishnamoorthy and the parent-teacher association had asked the state MIC for help when the school closed down in 2000 to make way for a development project.

The school, in the meantime, was operating from the rented premises while waiting to be relocated.

In Port Dickson, Murugiah said that MIC politicians need not be upset with him for highlighting the plight of the 120 pupils as he was only doing his job in his capacity as the deputy minister in charge of public complaints.

“I don’t understand why anyone wants to be upset with what I am doing. I don’t get politicians from other component parties getting upset with me when I help a Malay or Chinese,” he told reporters after a meeting with representatives from several government agencies at SJK(T) Ladang Sungai Salak.

Murugiah said he visited the school on Tuesday following complaints from the PTA that the children had been studying in the rented shoplots for the past two years.

He had earlier chaired a meeting with officers from the Public Works Department, land office, state Education Department, the school PTA and board of governors on the school’s future.

MIC wants 7.4% employment quota in GLCs for Indians

The MIC wants at least a 7.4 percent quota in employment for Indians in government-linked companies (GLC), including in senior managerial and executive positions, party president Datuk Seri S.Samy Vellu said Friday.

He said the quota was based on the minimum 7.4 percent target set by the government for the recruitment of Indians in the civil service.

"We are aware that many GLCs have increased the recruitment of Indians but more can and should be done," he said when opening the Terengganu MIC delegates conference here.

On Thursday, Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S.Subramaniam secured Telekom Malaysia Berhad's pledge to recruit more people from the Indian community to fill the 7.4 percent quota as agreed to by the Public Service Department.

Dr Subramaniam, who is also MIC secretary-general, had said that, to date, Indians in the company just made up 4.6 percent and this needed to be raised to show a more racially balanced workforce in the public sector.

Samy Vellu also said that the MIC had formed a special committee to be headed by Datuk Dr Denison Jayasooria to prepare a comprehensive report on the plans, policies and programmes for the Indian community under the Tenth Malaysia Plan (2011-2015).

He said he would also meet Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said soon to seek more business opportunities for Indians in the state.

"Although the number of Indians in Terengganu is less than one per cent, many are involved in small businesses and as contractors. The state government could allocate certain government contracts to them," he added.

KUALA LUMPUR: Some 50,000 fresh undergraduates of local public institutions of higher learning will get 100 units of the newly launched Amanah Saham 1Malaysia.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced the incentives at the launch of the new trust fund, which has a size of 10 billion units, with each unit going at RM1.

Amanah Saham 1Malaysia is the biggest trust fund in the country, and will go on sale from Aug 5.

“As a special consideration, the government has agreed that every student that enrolled in public institutions of higher learning, who are in their first year this year, will receive 100 units of Amanah Saham 1Malaysia for free,” he said.

The students eligible are those who had enrolled for their first degree recently in the mid-year intake.

“As they represent the country’s future, we want to see the young generation obtain education, at least up to a degree, so that they become citizens who are visionaries and progressive,” he said.

The free units for the students, totaling RM5mil, were contributed by Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) and Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad (ASNB) agents - Malayan Banking Berhad, CIMB Bank Berhad, RHB Bank Berhad and Pos Malaysia Berhad.

To ensure that the units were fairly distributed, Najib said that for the first 30 days of sale (Aug 5 to Sept 3), 50% of the units had been allocated to Bumiputras, 30% to the Chinese, 15% to the Indians and 5% to other races.

In the 30-day period, the maximum investment for an investor below 55 is 50,000 units, while investors above 55 can purchase a maximum of 100,000 units.

After the period, the cap on purchase on unsold units would be lifted, and the sale would be open to all Malaysians above 18, regardless of race.

Najib said he was confident the units would be sold out fast, citing Amanah Saham Malaysia which sold out within 45 minutes after its opening in 2006.

“With a fund size of 10 billion, Amanah Saham 1Malaysia will be able to boost the equity market and act as a catalyst to the country’s economy,” he said.

Investors can buy the units at ASNB offices and post offices from 8am to 5pm from Aug 5, and at Maybank, CIMB Bank and RHB Bank during the operating hours of the banks

EMPORARY Tamil school teachers who completed their teachers training course during the last school holidays will be receiving their appointment letters soon, Malaysia Nanban reported.

Malaya Tamil School Teachers Union National president P. Tharmalinggam said the Education Ministry had agreed to issue the appointment letters.

He said about 80 temporary teachers who had been selected to undergo teacher training during the holidays from December 2005 had completed their three-year training.

He urged the ministry to review the monthly payment of RM616 given to the teachers during their training, which was less than the amount given previously to other teachers for their training.

He also urged the ministry to consider a higher salary scale based on their previous experience as they had forgone their salary increment.

He said a student was sacked recently while another four were suspended.

PUTERA MIC has told Indian students not to refuse the university places that are offered because these are later offered to other communities, reported Malaysia Nanban.

Its coordinator, P. Kamalanathan said every year, about 300 students did not take up the offers citing reasons like the universities being too far and not being given the courses they wanted.

He said the list of successful university candidates would be out next Friday and urged those unsuccessful to appeal directly to the respective universities with a copy forwarded to them.

> Tamil Nesan reported that the recent liberalisation of 27 services sub-sectors provided a huge opportunity for foreign companies to start their franchise business in Malaysia.

Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said the leeway in equity control would enable foreign companies to have 100% ownership.

He said the franchise sector contributed only 6% to the country’s retail sector compared to 50% in developed countries.

KUDOS to the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak and the Government for the liberalisation steps taken on 27 services sub-sectors.

This is a far reaching decision and will further strengthen Malaysia’s image in the international business and trade communities such as the Asean Economic Community and the World Trade Organsation of which Malaysia is a member.

Such a move is timely and expedient, considering the current challenges and turmoil of the global business and financial sectors.

They will be the stepping stone for increased competitiveness and value-enhanced services to make Malaysia the investor’s choice destination.

However, there remains much to be done as the policies instituted are only as good as the implementation agents.

One of the main thrusts of development of a country’s resources is of course its education system. As long as the best and brightest are not given priority and aid, then it’s a leakage of our pivotal strength of human resource development.In the long run, it will lead to a brain drain and undermine our competitiveness and performance.

Just as the Government has reviewed and rescinded the above mentioned policies, it should also take a closer look at our education system and make similar adjustments to ensure the cream of Malaysian students get the necessary help to fulfil their potential.

For instance, the matriculation centres for learning only allocate 10% of seats for non-Malays. Although it is understandable that the Government needs to balance the need for meritocracy and achieving its social restructuring agenda which is the aim of the NEP, there must be some recourse for all students who have achieved excellent results and do not have the means to further their academic careers due to financial considerations.

After all, these children are Malaysians too and deserve to get the same opportunities as other Malaysians.

Policies that reward excellence will not only be good for the country but also strengthen the will of all students to work hard knowing their efforts will be rewarded by the state. This, in a nutshell, would be the ultimate fruition of the 1Malaysia concept in action.

RM2m for new Tamil school

KUALA LUMPUR: The condition of the school was shocking, but Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was most impressed with the teachers and students.

SJKT Ladang Bukit Jalil, which has 90 pupils, is in a dilapidated condition."I feel sad they have to put up with this old and rundown school which has been around for 75 years. Despite the aid provided by the government, the infrastructure is not that good."The building could pose a threat to the safety of the students and teachers. It's stuffy and uncomfortable.I am sympathetic to their plight," Muhyiddin said after visiting SJKT Ladang Bukit Jalil, near Puchong here.The school does not have a field and its classrooms are cramped.Muhyiddin, who is also education minister, announced an immediate allocation of RM2 million for the school's new building, to be built on an adjacent 0.3ha plot of land belonging to Kuala Lumpur City Hall.

He said the new classrooms and amenities would be able to cater for about 200 students when completed next year. The school now accommodates 90 students. Muhyiddin also said the school would be fully aided.Present were Federal Territories Deputy Minister Datuk M. Saravanan and Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Senator Datuk T. Murugiah. Muhyiddin later visited SMK Setapak Indah in Setapak here. He was joined by Works Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor to check on the condition of the school. Muhyiddin said the Public Works Department should conduct checks and carry out repairs as cracks had appeared a few years after the building was completed. "However, the building structure is still strong and can continue to be used," Muhyiddin said his visits to the two schools were fruitful as he now understood the issues and problems in the education sector better.

Putera MIC launches first FT division

THE MIC’s Putera wing added another feather to its cap with the launch of the Segambut Putera MIC division recently.

Putera MIC has a total of 20 divisions nationwide and the Segambut division is the first to be set up in the Federal Territory, with more divisions coming up.

Putera wing national coordinator P. Kamalanathan said more divisions would be set up in the FT in the next few months, and they had been going on a massive recruitment drive since the wing was created in 2007.

“The wing was created to provide an avenue for young Malaysian Indians to help the community in social and educational issues.

“Those aged between 18 and 30 are encouraged to take part in social services and welfare work and carry out programmes that benefit the community,” Kamalanathan said.

According to Segambut Putera MIC head S. Yogendran, the division has a total of 50 active members who are professionals, and they hope to carry out their social obligation via education.

“That is our core aim – to help our youth in education, ICT and career development,” he said.

“We want to steer them in the right direction. If they want to pursue their studies, set up a business or pick up computer skills – we can help,” Yogendran said, adding that members would guide these youngsters so as to minimise, and ultimately rid, the community of social problems related to gangsterism, and drug abuse, among other things.

Demoted but not defeated

KUALA LUMPUR: From a senior clerk to a typist. That is the story of P. Kamalanathan, who had to accept a demotion so he could cling on to a job in the late 1980s.

"I refused to leave when the company began retrenching during the financial crisis," said the 43-year-old, who was working for a cement manufacturing company in Rawang then.

He was given two options: a voluntary separation scheme or a demotion.

"I had a family to feed and I knew if I resigned, there were no jobs outside. Since I needed the money, I accepted a job as a typist. Not only was my pay cut by half, I was also transferred to Chemor, Perak," said Kamalanathan, who was earning RM800 as a clerk.

Kamalanathan left his family for three years. "During that time, I realised the importance of education and saved up money to take up distance learning."
He said three years later, things changed for the better when he hosted a sports event here which caught the eye of his boss.

"My boss saw my performance, especially my communication skills, and offered me the same clerical position I once held."

He said the transfer did not only teach him valuable lessons about community relations and the importance of higher education but also gave him the chance to learn an additional skill.

"If I did not take up that offer, I don't think I would have started blogging or begun communicating online."

Kamalanathan leads Putera MIC and is a public relations manager with Serba Wangi Sdn Bhd.

"If you are demoted, do not let go of the job, especially during a financial crisis. There may be a skill or two that you can learn from it that would help you in the future."

After almost a year full of unstable politics in Perak state, the end is here. Perak MB has declared to dissolve the state assembly. Whether there would be a re-election or not is in the hands of Perak state's Sultan. On 4/2/09 at 3.50pm, Perak's MB visited the palace. At 4pm, Datuk Seri Najib arranged a press conference in his office to declare the fall of Perak to BN. In the other hand, Perak’s MB says that he will stay remain as MB untill this Friday’s exco meeting. In mean time, Datuk Seri Najib will meet the Perak Sultan soon to discuss about BN taking over Perak.

So let’s discuss about this, is Perak government really weak as what BN claimed last year? Will this happen to other states as well? Should we have re-election in Perak state & Why? Let’s talk about this; comments are opened for this post. Sincerely we are putting our both hands together, please do not use any vulgar words.

I guess this is the right time to write about this. A bloggers Code of ethics. Since we have a lot of bloggers in country all mixed up with professional and new bloggers, all this blog's getting miss used to backstabbing ,humitalting other races and so on. Since not all bloggers are journalists and the Weblog form is more casual, they argue they shouldn't be expected to follow the same ethics codes journalists are. But responsible bloggers should recognize that they are publishing words publicly, and therefore have certain ethical obligations to their readers, the people they write about, and society in general.These are just guidelines in the end it is up to individual bloggers to choose their own best practices.

So my message to bloggers like sammy the bammy,Pendekar Tanah Air, and other bloggers, Integrity is the cornerstone of credibility. Bloggers who adopt this code of principles and these standards of practice not only practice ethical publishing, but convey to their readers that they can be trusted. Before reading this guidelines, can anyone give me the real meaning of blog and it's ussage?

A BLOGGERS' CODE OF ETHICS

Be Honest and Fair
Bloggers should be honest and fair in gathering, reporting and interpreting information.
Bloggers should:
• Never plagiarize.
• Identify and link to sources whenever feasible. The public is entitled to as much information as possible on sources' reliability.
• Make certain that Weblog entries, quotations, headlines, photos and all other content do not misrepresent. They should not oversimplify or highlight incidents out of context.
• Never distort the content of photos without disclosing what has been changed. Image enhancement is only acceptable for for technical clarity. Label montages and photo illustrations.
• Never publish information they know is inaccurate -- and if publishing questionable information, make it clear it's in doubt.
• Distinguish between advocacy, commentary and factual information. Even advocacy writing and commentary should not misrepresent fact or context.
• Distinguish factual information and commentary from advertising and shun hybrids that blur the lines between the two.

Minimize Harm
Ethical bloggers treat sources and subjects as human beings deserving of respect.
Bloggers should:
• Show compassion for those who may be affected adversely by Weblog content. Use special sensitivity when dealing with children and inexperienced sources or subjects.
• Be sensitive when seeking or using interviews or photographs of those affected by tragedy or grief.

Be Accountable
Bloggers should:
• Admit mistakes and correct them promptly.
• Explain each Weblog's mission and invite dialogue with the public over its content and the bloggers' conduct.
• Disclose conflicts of interest, affiliations, activities and personal agendas.
• Deny favored treatment to advertisers and special interests and resist their pressure to influence content. When exceptions are made, disclose them fully to readers.
• Be wary of sources offering information for favors. When accepting such information, disclose the favors.
• Expose unethical practices of other bloggers.
• Abide by the same high standards to which they hold others.

Earlier today morning, I made a police report against the 'Pendekar Tanah Air' blog at the Petaling Jaya police headquarters, accompanied by Putera MIC National Coordinator Mr. P. Kamalanathan. Following the report, I was asked to provide my statement to the police.

I notice that the offensive blog has been removed, however the damage is done. Such behaviour cannot, and should not be tolerated. Let this be a reminder to all, that Putera MIC will not sit by and allow such insults to be heaped on the Indian community!

Saya, Premnath a/l Agamutu, K/P 800412-14-xxxx, pada hari ini, 31 Januari 2009, ingin melaporkan kewujudan sebuah laman web berbentuk blog, bertajuk ‘Pendekar Tanahair’, di alamat webhttp://pendekartanahair.blogspot.com yand dikendalikan oleh orang yang menggunakan nama samaran ‘Pendekar Ramlee’.

Laman blog ini menghina kaum India di Malaysia, dengan kata-kata kesat dan menyakitkan. Ia mengandungi pelbagai tuduhan dan maklumat yang salah mengenai rakyat Malaysia yang berketurunan India. Laman ini juga mengandungi unsur-unsur hasutan, bertujuan mewujudkan rasa benci terhadap orang-orang India, sejurus mengancam perpaduan kaum di negara yang berbilang kaum ini.

Berikut adalah beberapa petikan dari laman tersebut yang berunsur hasutan:

1. Tuhan buatkan mereka berkulit hitam sebagai amaran kepada umat kita semua yang orang India ini adalah orang yang tidak baik sama sekali.

5. Sebab utama ini ialah mereka adalah kasta "pariah" dan diambil oleh orang British sebagai kuli untuk bekerja di ladang getah.

6. Sebab itu mereka harus di lanyak dan di pukul selalu. Ini adalah kerana otak mereka adalah seperti binatang. Mereke tidak faham akan erti budi pekerti dan cuma seperti seekor lembu dan tidak mempunyai pikiran dan emosi sebagai manusia.

7. Saya syorkan semua orang india dipukul sebulan sekali untuk mengajar mereka supaya dapat menjadi manusia yang berguna dan bukan binatang.

8. Kaum yang tak berguna, kuat menipu, merompak dan mencuri.

9. Lepas tue jadi loyar buruk, cakap yang bukan-bukan macam diorang nie macam bumiputra? Siapa kaum keparat nie. Si celaka india nie.

10. Kaki minum, kaki tipu dan kaki putar belit.

11. Lintah darat - ini lah kaum keling kepada orang Melayu di Malaysia nie.

12. Dah lah banyak buat dosa, banyak kes kecurian, rogol dan pembunuhan.

Ponggal - KL TOWER

KUALA LUMPUR: Beads of sweat formed on his forehead as Norzaidin Mazalan fanned the charcoal embers in the stove.

The milk in the claypot was taking its time to boil but the restless Norzaidin was far from giving up.

Thirty minutes later, the milk finally boiled over and Norzaidin, drenched in sweat, shouted Pongalo Ponggal!, signifying the start of the harvest festival.

The lecturer from Masterskill University College was among the few non-Indians who joined the National Ponggal Festival held at Menara Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The event was launched by Datin Seri Indrani Samy Vellu.
"This is not an easy task. Waiting for the milk to spill over takes a lot of patience but it was an exciting experience for me," said Norzaidin, who brought a team of 20 students from different races.

"It's interesting to see how the sweet rice is cooked in the traditional way, and I wanted to try it myself especially since nobody uses a charcoal stove to cook any more," he said.

The National Ponggal Festival, which is in its seventh year, saw more than 500 Malaysians of different races as well as tourists participating in the celebration.

Ponggal, which falls on Jan 14 or 15, is celebrated by Tamils worldwide to thank the earth, sun, farmers and animals that have helped in getting a bountiful harvest.

"We rarely get a chance to participate in cultural events so I was not going to miss this," said Help University College student Lau King Ming.

Organising chairman P. Kamalanathan said "Ponggal is a festival where we can thank all the farmers in Malaysia for their hardwork.

"I hope Malaysians would make Ponggal as their very own thanksgiving festival."

Besides Menara Kuala Lumpur, the Ponggal Festival will be celebrated at Menara Tamingsari, Malacca, and selected temples and universities nationwide.

This year, the organisers will also be taking the Ponggal festival to Moscow in Russia and Salem in India to celebrate with Malaysian Indian students there. This was to encourage Malaysian youth overseas to promote their culture and heritage.

THE Westin Kuala Lumpur staff recently made a date with children from the Malaysian Association of Guardians for the Intellectually Challenged (MAGIC) to spend an evening jogging around KLCC Park.

The run was organised as part of the hotel’s long-term community service programme with MAGIC.

Led by Westin’s workout manager, Veronica Schokman, the participants went through a 10-minute warmup session before jogging together around the park.

The Westin provides training to MAGIC children in skills that will assist them in gaining employment in the hospitality field. Into its fourth year of the programme, about eight children head for the hotel weekly to undergo training in pastry making, towel-folding and banquet set-up.

“This is our way of connecting with the community, as well as helping our own team to be more considerate and caring,” said Westin general manager Kim Powley.

Marie Anne Selvarajah, 23, graduated from the programme this year and is currently employed on a part-time basis by The Westin in the pastry department.

“I come in four days a week, and I really enjoy working here because it’s so interesting,” said Marie Anne of her working experience.

MAGIC is an education centre set up in 2000 by parents of children with autism and Down’s syndrome. Its president and co-founder, Nerin Yusof, said that with the centre, “we know our children will be getting a practical education”.

Parent and co-founder Elizabeth Perera agreed, saying that MAGIC aims to train its students to go out and be part of the community at large.

“At MAGIC, the children are taught social and domestic skills that will enable them to live a little more independently.

“This programme has really affected the lives of the children. In that vein, MAGIC is open to working with other organisations in providing meaningful experiences for our students,” said Perera.

The MAGIC education centre currently has 10 students aged between 13 and 23, two full-time teachers and two assistant teachers.

FORMER Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad will be the guest of honour at the bloggers conference called Bloggers Buff 2008 on Saturday at Putra World Trade Centre.

Mahathir, who is also a blogger, will be delivering the keynote address entitled Unity and Accountability in Blogging.

The event will be a conference-cum-networking event where established speakers will share their experiences.

“It is a stepping stone to get Malaysian bloggers from various genres to come together to open up their minds towards different aspects of blogging and to comment on issues that affect bloggers in the country,’’ Putera MIC national coordinator P. Kamala-nathan said.

GoMobile is sponsoring the conference, which is being organised by MI Fest Management. Traxx FM is the official radio station for the event.

The one-day event is endorsed by Empower Lives, All Blogs and Malaysian Indian Bloggers (MIB) and supported by Putera MIC.

The conference will be held from 9am to 7pm.

The first session will be themed Blogging Realities and deals with current issues like ethics, law, money-making and technology.

The second session, on the other hand, is targeted at young bloggers.

1.MCA wants 30 percent bumiputera equity in public-listed companies to be abolished.

2.But PAS and ABIM ( Anwar's boys? ) WARNS not to stir hornets nest by abolishing Bumi's rights. PAS Youth chief Salahuddin Ayub said that the 30-percent equity must be retained and defended "even if the target has been reached!"

I wonder how long they are going to do this same 'ol' thing again and again!. Let me quote an article written by Mr.Baradan Kuppusamy in THE STAR.

On the one hand, it frequently falls on the values of Islam to defend rights, namely over the rights of Hindu Rights Action Front supporters to demonstrate even at the Prime Minister’s Hari Raya gathering but at the same time the party rejects the appointment of a Chinese as PKNS general manager.

This clearly shows PAS is not as confused as I think. They were never confused with their stand. They are just bunch of good actors I would say. In front of Indians they would say "Valghe Makkal Sakthi,Equal Rights for Everyone!" , infront of Malays they say " Long Live DEB! The economy pies is ours and ours only!!"

Now , who is doing SANDIWARA? Now , who is playing the race cards? Now, who is being RASICT?

Putera MIC calls for donations from the public (The Star Updates)

THE Putera MIC has launched a book donation drive campaign to upgrade the libraries in Tamil schools nationwide.

“We aim to collect 5,000 books and distribute them to at least one Tamil school in each state,” said the Putera MIC national coordinator P. Kamalanathan.

The campaign will run till the end of this year and the books will be delivered to the respective schools by the beginning of next year.

He said there was a serious need for good books in Tamil schools.

“We want to help within our means. Since we can’t afford to give them tables and chairs, we are trying our best to help in our own way,” he said.

According to Kamalanathan, eligible schools who request for the book aid will be given priority.

“We will also be visiting the schools to ensure that they have valid reasons to accept the book aid,” he added.

“For those who have Mandarin books or Islamic religious books, you can donate it as well and we will hand it over to Chinese or the Malay schools that need it,” Kamalanathan added.

The Putera MIC website has details of drop off zones around the country. However if the donors have difficulty bringing the books to the zones, Putera MIC members are willing to pick them up.

THE role that bloggers play in disseminating information cannot be under-estimated. Just like mainstream media, blogging has become a tool to educate and create awareness among communities, said P. Kamalanathan, national co-ordinator for Putera MIC.

Kamalanathan points out that Malaysian Indian bloggers have become instrumental in influencing public opinion in the country and drawing attention from outside the country.

The pool of bloggers of Indian origin in Malaysia, for instance, has become instrumental in influencing public opinion in the country and drawing attention from outside the country, he pointed out.

“Bloggers of Indian origin in the country may be only one per cent of the total Malaysian bloggers, but the role that they play in disseminating information, sharing ideas and voicing laypeople’s grievances cannot be denied. They have shown that they are not only capable of expressing themselves in words, but also have the capability to pull in foreign blog readers.”

Recognising blogging as an essential tool to share information, Putera MIC has taken the initiative to organise the Manya Blogger Awards. This initiative not only recognises and honours the best of Malaysian Indian bloggers, but also aims to encourage more Malaysian Indians to blog.

“Manya, derived from Sanskrit, means honourable or respectable, and it is aptly used here to recognise extraordinary Malaysian Indian bloggers who have contributed to creating a more knowledgeable and better society,” Kamalanathan explained.

Since it was announced in June, the initiative has received tremendous response. Putera MIC has already shortlisted the finalists under nine categories based on theme or genre and two special awards for the most popular bloggers. Of the nine categories, eight are targeted specifically at Indian bloggers.

Winners will be decided by online votes from readers, and a panel of independent judges. The awards ceremony is scheduled to be held in the middle of this month.

According to Kamalanathan, Putera MIC also sees the Manya Blogger Awards initiative as a trial run to undertake bigger campaigns to promote blogging to all Malaysians irrespective of race. For example, the awards next year will not only focus on Malaysians of Indian origin, but also all Malaysians.

Putera MIC also supports Bloggers Buff, a workshop-cum-forum to gather Malaysian bloggers from different genres to network and explore the various issues and aspects of blogging. The event aims to, among others, create a good network of Malaysian bloggers of different genres, alienate fear and negative perception of blogs in mainstream print media, and promote responsible blogging.

Kamalanathan also dispelled any notion that Putera MIC’s attention on bloggers is to have a political influence on them.

“The younger generation is Net savvy. They prefer to gather information and research on the Internet. We recognise the influence bloggers have on the younger generation. In particular, the aim is to encourage them via blogs to be involved in community development programmes, and for bloggers to positively influence the development of their communities,” he pointed out.

Seven temples awaiting land titles to relocate

SEVEN temples in Puchong are awaiting land titles in order to relocate.

Awtar Singh, special assistant to Seri Serdang assemblyman Datuk Dr Mohd Satim Diman, highlighted the plight of the Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist temples recently.

New site: Two Hindu temples, one Buddhist temple and one Sikh temple will be built on this piece of land in Lebuh Puteri in Puchong.

He pointed out that these temples had already settled the planning issues with the local council, and were waiting for the state government and Land Office to issue them the land titles.

The temples are Persatuan Penganut Devi Arulmigu Sri Nagakali Jai Muniswarar in Puchong Hartamas, Kuil Aum Sri Maha Aathi Nageswary Amman in Puchong Gateway, Persatuan Pengurusan Kuil Maha Mariamman in Taman Perindustrian Pusat Bandar Puchong, Kuil Naga Nagawasrya Amman in Taman Puchong Intan, Kuil Aaudayar Muniswarar Alayam in Bandar Puteri Puchong, Persatuan Penganut Agama Sikh in Batu 14 Puchong and Persatuan Penganut Agama Buddha in Bandar Puteri Puchong.

“These temples have been given land to relocate and some have already had the structures put up by the developers.

“The land has been endorsed in the One-Stop Centre in the Subang Jaya Municipal Council and the district officer was supposed to submit papers to the state government for approval.

“Once approved, the temples will have to submit applications for the land titles.

“But the district officer hasn’t done his part yet,” Awtar said.

He said he has spoken to Selangor health, plantation workers and caring government committee chairman Dr Xavier Jeyakumar, who is also in the three-man committee on non-Muslim religious affairs, about three months ago but no action had been taken so far.

“I urge him to call for a meeting at the Land Office to hear the problems of these temples. The Land Office can get the paper work done immediately to send to the Selangor exco for approval,” he said.

Handling Stress

I bet most of us face stress more then relaxation, I hope this article will be to guide us to reduce our stress to lower level.

Everybody experiences stress. A certain amount is even good for you. Too much stress can damage your physical, emotional, and mental health. Since it is not always possible to prevent stress, we all need to learn how to reduce it. Choose among the following techniques what you think will work best for you. Make them part of your everyday life.

1. PREVENT IT. How much stress do you cause just by putting unnecessary pressure on yourself? Do you over react to little things that annoy you? Every time you let anger or frustration take control, it drains away good energy and sidetracks you from more important things. Obviously, you can't always control what goes on around you, but you can control how you respond. Try a little more patience next time you get caught in traffic and you'll avoid unnecessary stress.

2. SET GOALS. Some people drift through life going from crisis to crisis letting stress build up. If you set goals, you can take better control of your life. Think where you'd like to be in 1 year or 5 years. Be realistic by starting with small, daily goals, then build up from there. Re-evaluate your goals from time to time and be prepared to adjust them as changes occur in your life.

3. ESTABLISH PRIORITIES. Do you often feel rushed because "there's no time"? Why not regulate the pace of your life? Plan ahead. Make a list of tasks in order of priority. Concentrate on what's really important to you and drop those things that only waste your energy.

4. TAKE TIME OUT. Spend a few minutes alone each day to break the routine. This helps ease stress and gives you a better perspective of what's around you. Set aside time during the week for recreation, hobbies, or exercise. Regular exercise is an excellent way to reduce stress. Physical fitness gives you a feeling of well-being by relieving tension and increasing productivity.

5. HAVE FAITH. Peace of mind comes to those who trust in God's power to lessen life's burdens through prayer.

6. THINK POSITIVELY. Having a positive attitude will help you assert yourself and feel more in control. You waste energy if you constantly criticize yourself or set unrealistic goals. Negative thoughts generally produce negative results. Instead of saying, "I can't," practice saying, "I can." You'll be surprised how much more you can accomplish.

7. HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR. Laughter can be one of the best medicines for stress. Being able to laugh at yourself and the world can break tension and give you some relief from stress.

8. COMMUNICATE. Suffering in silence only increases the stress you build up inside. Talk over your feelings and concerns with your family, a friend, counselor, preacher, or health professional. "Thinking out loud" like this not only relieves stress, but may also shed new light on your problems. Learn to listen and consider suggestions with an open mind.

9. MAKE DECISIONS. Most people have no idea how much stress they create for themselves by resisting change. They wait, hoping a situation will go back to the way it was. Why wait when you have choices and could make a decision? When it's time to change old habits and move forward, make your own change for the better.

10. GET SUPPORT. Do you sometimes find problems too personal to discuss? Or feel they may be too much of a burden on others? Find a support group in your community. Remember, you're not alone. Other people with similar problems understand what you're going through without the need for lengthy explanations. They share your concerns and they want to learn how to cope with stress, too.

Homemaker left in the lurch

HOUSEWIFE Mathavee Perumal @ Norfauziana Abdullah, 40, is in need of financial aid urgently and Putera MIC is appealing on her behalf for generous Malaysians to assist her.

The Bandar Kinrara resident gave birth to a baby boy on Sept 15, and has four other children.

Her husband Ibrahim Yaakub, 46, who used to work as a trader, has been lying in a coma at a hospital in Kuala Lumpur since March 19 following an accident at home.

“Ibrahim passed out after he fell down at home. He was rushed to the hospital and had an operation, where the doctor discovered a blood clot in his brain,” said Norfauziana’s sister-in-law Syamsuriah Mustaffa.

“He has slipped into a coma and has been declared brain dead,” she said.

Syamsuriah said Norfauziana had been running back and forth between taking care of her husband in the hospital and her children at home.

“When she was warded in the same hospital as her husband to deliver her baby, her children stayed at my place in Pantai Dalam,” said Syamsuriah

Norfauziana was supposed to be discharged on Sept 17, but she did not have the money to pay for her hospital bills then.

Meanwhile, the SK Assunta 1 Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) found out about Norfauziana’s situation through her daughter.

They tried to highlight her case via some local magazines and contacted Putera MIC national coordinator P. Kamalanathan to seek his assistance.

“I visited Norfauziana on Sept 17 and found out that RM1,010 was needed to settle her bill alone.

“I called my contacts and, within 24 hours, managed to raise RM1,100 to get Norfauziana discharged on Sept 19.”

Even though training centre Allied View Centre Sdn Bhd contributed some money for her daily expenses, Kamalanathan hoped the public could still assist Norfauziana.

“Her home in Bandar Kinrara was put up for auction sometime this year as she couldn’t settle the monthly instalments with the bank,” he said.

“She tried applying for a low-cost flat with the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, but her application was rejected on grounds that she owned a house within a 35km radius of the KL city centre (even though it was already put up for auction),” Kamalanathan said.

Ampang Sri Maha Kaliamman Temple Issue

As most of you all know , this issue has been brought up by MIC president,Datuk Sri S.Samy Vellu few days back. Pemuda MIC Selangor even made Police report on this incident.

Now , Selangor state goverment is trying to "wash" their hands over this matter.

Our brother in Selangor state government , Dr Xavier Jayakumar said this to Malaysiakini earlier. ( my questions/comments in RED )

The Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) ordered the demolition of the 19-year old Sri Maha Kaliamman temple without the knowledge or directive of the Selangor state government. ( Is this how you guys run a state government? Dont know what is happening at grassroot level. Only kindergarden kids give answers like this , Saya Tak Tahu! )

He said the temple was also not registered with the Selangor state council. ( If it is not registered,it wont be taken care/protected? Good Answer !Pity those temples who have not registered yet! Beware of temple destroyer)

And it is not a temple, it is a shrine which it is located on a forest reserve. (It is just a shrine??? I have no comments on this. I leave my brothers in Hindraf or any other brother from Pakatan Rakyat to answer this statement themselves!! )

I must say Indian voters who supported Dr.Xavier Jayakumar during last General Election must be very proud!!

I can keep on asking 1001 question in this same issue. But I leave the questions AND answers to my good readers, for, they are the best judge in this reality show.

IPOH: Many Indian voters in the country who abandoned the MIC during the March 8 general election are now turning back to the party, claims party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.

He said “hundreds of people” had started thronging the party’s offices everyday, knowing that only the MIC could help them.

“In the last elections, about 50% of the Indian community rejected the MIC and supported the Opposition.

“But many want to return now,” he told reporters at a hotel here yesterday after opening a workshop on re-branding the party.

The Indian community, Samy Vellu said, has realised that it needed to have a close relationship with the Federal Government through the MIC in order to improve its livelihood.

“They admit to having been confused and in disarray, that they were influenced into voting for the Opposition but I tell them that it does not matter.

“When asked why they had come back looking for us, their answer was that the MIC has an administration, offices and an experienced leadership, and has continued looking after the people despite having lost in the elections.

“This is the reason why they are still interested in forging a relationship with the MIC,” he said.

Samy Vellu said response to the re-branding workshops nationwide was also encouraging, and urged grassroots leaders to discard their old mindset and “go back to thinking the people are our bosses”.

He admitted that the MIC had erred in not using the Internet and electronic media to reach out to the Indian community during the elections.

He also announced that the party would launch its own Internet portal in October.

I'm wiling to share a situation which i saw with my own eyes,A single mother who willing to sent her daughter to continue her studies in russia, she had arrange all the course fee's for her daughter, but she cant arrange the flight ticket which cost around Rm4000++ , after dato seri hear's everything from her side, he immediatly approve the amount for the flight price.The women's tear drops when she came out from the office and said "Finnaly there is a person who willing to help me". This is not a story for publisti or what, but its a true story. So my advice is please dont see everthing from outside,please step in ,and see everything from our part too. Thank you

Fractures re-emerge within PAS over Sept 16 plan

translation Fractures are re-appearing between party spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and Terengganu PAS Commisioner Mustafa Ali - which many thought had simmered down after PAS-Umno talks stalled.

The latest flare-up began with Mustafa's critique of Anwar Ibrahim's government takeover plans for Sept 16 - carried by PAS organ Harakah in their Sept 12 edition and Malay daily Utusan Malaysia on Sept 11.

An immediate response from Nik Aziz was to describe the party election chairperson as "Umno's mouthpiece" and "whose voice echoes that of the Umno president".

Nik Aziz went further to suggest that Terengganu PAS "had chosen the wrong person to be commissioner", ending with a query if Mustafa was set to quit PAS and join Umno.

His full statement was toned down in Harakah, and several mentions linking Mustafa to Umno were omitted. Mustafa is the chairperson of Harakah's board of directors.

Various blogs have been carrying the full version of Nik Aziz's statement.

Nik Aziz repeated his full criticism of Mustafa during a talk he delivered at PAS' training centre in Gombak last Sunday - two days after his controversial statements were published.

Contacted by Malaysiakini on Monday, the Terengganu commissoner declined to comment.

Mustafa's initial analysis as reported by Harakah and Utusan on why the Sept 16 takeover was unlikely was based on two arguments. One, Parliament was not in session, therefore no vote of no-confidence could be conducted.Two, never before has any BN legislator ever crossed over.

Removal order

A Harakah journalist Wan Nordin Wan Yaacob - when he knew the Nik Aziz statement would not be carried in full - posted it in his blog on Sept 13. A day later he was asked to remove the statement by his chief executive officer Ahmad Lutfi Othman.

"Several excuses were given, but I am sure he (Ahmad Lufit) was faced with a dilemma. I sadly took out the said article and now feel the freedom to voice out has been restricted," said Wan Nordin in his blog.

Another journalist who wished to remain anonymous was contacted by a party leader who "requested that the issue was not played up". The Kelantan menteri besar's statement was described as extreme.

"I am just a small writer caught between the political ideologies of two factions..." said the journalist.

Wan Nordin, who wrote the article entitled Mursyidul am (Nik Aziz) wants Pakatan Rakyat strengthened: criticises Mustafa did not disclose which PAS leaders contacted him and the other journalist.

Malaysiakini could not reach Wan Nordin yesterday.

'Against Muktamar'

The widely distributed statement showed Niz Aziz's concern about Harakah's support for Pakatan Rakyat's drive to topple the BN government

"I cannot imagine how Harakah can play its role as the party organ if this Terengganu PAS commissioner can take a stand that goes against the decision of the party muktamar (general assembly).

"I believe this will affect its discussions, news articles, stories and articles. What with the twice-weekly publication, this will erode Harakah's image even faster. Logically, this would lead to lower readership.

"I believe a decision needs to be made regarding this matter," said Nik Aziz.

There are those that argue that these are not the words of the spiritual leader but of the 'Erdogan' faction - a reference to the younger moderate group led by PAS vice-president Husam Musa - which is aligned to Nik Aziz.

"I do not believe these are the words of Tuan Guru Nik Aziz or an expression of his thoughts and feelings."

"The Nik Aziz that we all know has never attacked anyone personally, what more a fellow PAS leader," reads an Anti-Husam blog which introduced the 'Erdogan' term - referring to reformist Islamist Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

It further clarified, "I believe Husam and/or his Erdogan group played a big role in issuing the statement... whether Nik Aziz is aware of it or not. It is not possible for Nik Aziz to have used the term 'standing ovation' as contained in his statement.

(However it has been confirmed that Nik Aziz did make the statement, and also used the term 'standing ovation', in his speech at Gombak.)

This development confirms clear differences of opinion in PAS over the Sept 16 plan and this may impact its commitment to Pakatan.

MALACCA: Putera MIC is looking to add 50 new divisions and recruit about 5,000 Indian youths aged 18 to 30 by the middle of next year.

Chief P. Kamalanathan said: "We target to open 50 new Putera MIC divisions in the next 10 months. The response has been overwhelming, especially from Selangor and Johor."Most of our members are graduates, and this will help the movement become a strong and reputable force for the MIC." The Alor Gajah Putera MIC division was the 10th division to be opened since Putera MIC was formed in 2006, he said.

"Most of the members comprise Universiti Teknikal Malaysia and Universiti Multimedia graduates," he added.
State Putera MIC chief Rama Sockalingam said they expected to open more divisions in Malacca, particularly in Tangga Batu and Bukit Katil."We are also looking at opening new divisions in Jasin, Masjid Tanah and Kota Melaka. But we will only do this after we find suitable leaders to head the divisions."

Meanwhile, on the Manya Blogger Awards 2008 initiated by Putera MIC to recognise Indian bloggers, he said the "People's Choice Blogger Award" was open to all races.He said the award was aimed at creating awareness among the Indian community of blogging.

Today is an historical day for us, as a Malaysian Indian we should be proud about our motherland India. Former India president, Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, or known as Dr. Abdul Kalam came to University Malaya, to give a special lecture to all audience especially for youths. His lecture was simply superb, and he supports youth 100% and he wants the youths power be used for goodness.

Dr. Abdul Kalam was here yesterday for a talk by Khazanah Global Lectures, this chance was make used by Universiti Malaya Indian Society Club to organize this special lecture for us. Congrats to Universiti Malaya Indian students for organizing this special event.

Singapore's Nanyang Technological University (NTU) conferred an honorary Degree of Doctor of Engineering on well-known space scientist and India's former President few days back. Dr Abdul Kalam will be at Heritage Walk Penang tomorrow, and will make a move on Saturday or Sunday.

The content of his speech is enriched with lots of guide and quotes from him, relay worth it to those who attend this special lecture. I wish if I can be a student of him. From his words I knew that, in each youth there is one small Abdul Kalam in their heart. No wonder when people talk bad about Abdul Kalam, people in India will get mad. I can feel the vibration and the heat of the speech. He has put youths in a higher place as a back bone for a country. We hope that, he will visit Malaysia again some other time, and can spend more time with youths. Thank you

The Top 10 Steps for Choosing a Career

Career choices may well be more difficult today than at any time in history, for three reasons: there is infinitely more to choose from; career definitions are more fluid and changing; and the levels of expectation are rising. Most men and women entering the workforce today can expect to change careers three or more times during their working lives. Here are ten steps that will help ensure that your choices are good ones.

1. Begin with your values.

What's really important to you? What turns you on? What do you like to do so much that you would almost feel guilty getting paid to do it? These questions are designed to help you get at one of the key elements in career choice: values. Your values are the emotional anchor of all that you do. Satisfying careers are built upon the notion of a high correspondence between one's personal values and the work they will be doing. Begin your career search by sorting out your values and writing them down as clearly and succinctly as you can.

2. Identify your skills and talents.

A skill is something you've learned to do. A talent is something you've been born with, or at least that you seem naturally qualified to do. It's important to recognize the difference between the two. You may be skilled at something and still not find it interesting. Chances are, however, if you are naturally talented at something, there will be a correspondence between that particular talent and your values. Put another way: you are more apt to enjoy doing what you do well naturally than what you have simply been taught to do.

3. Identify your preferences.

From early on, we approach the world with certain personal preferences--how we perceive others, how we think and make decisions, whether we prefer concepts over people or vice versa, and the extent to which we are comfortable with uncertainty in our lives. For many, these preferences operate at a subconscious level, but they strongly influence the way we function with others. Some questions may help: Do you regard yourself as highly intuitive? Are you outgoing or reserved? When faced with a decision, do you rely primarily on facts or feelings? Your answers to these questions can tell you much about the kinds of work you will find interesting and challenging. One way of sorting this all out is by taking the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator a self-assessing instrument that helps clarify these issues. If you haven't taken it in the past year, or at all, I strongly recommend that you take it and include your results in your career deliberations.

4. Experiment.

There's no substitute for experience, the more the better. It's probably safe to say that nearly every career looks vastly different from the outside than from within. If you're new to the job market or if you are considering a career change, get out and talk to people who are actually doing it. Take a job in the field or industry and see for yourself if it's really all you thought it would be. And don't rely on a single authority or work experience. Within the bounds of the area you've picked, try to get as much and as varied experience as you can. If you're committed to finding out about a certain career, you may want to consider volunteering in order to gain work experience. That way, you'll be able to test out whether it fits your values and preferences. If you aren't getting paid to do it, chances are you won't stay with it unless you like it.

5. Become broadly literate.

In this high tech information world, there is an incredible pressure to specialize, to know more and more about less and less. That's dangerous, because it increases your chances of being obsolescent immensely. Many people lose their jobs and scuttle their careers because they have gradually developed tunnel vision about who and what they are and what their capabilities are. The old debate over specialist versus generalist is being tempered by a new term: the generalist/specialist. That's the individual who has been able to grasp the large picture while, at the same time, becoming expert on several of its parts. That's what becoming broadly literate is all about. Learn as much as you can about what interests you and about the jobs and careers your're considering--not just what those involved are currently doing, but about where the industry or profession is heading.

6. In your first job, opt for experience first, money second.

If you're at the top of your class graduating summa cum laude, you may be able to combine both in a single package, but for most new entrants into the workforce, it's a matter of priorities. A good way of sizing up several opportunities is to ask yourself: "Which position will offer me the best chance of becoming excellent at what I do?" And that may not be the one that pays the highest initial salary.

7. Aim for a job in which you can become 110% committed.

Modest decication and average performance are unacceptable today. The problem is, with downsizing becoming fully acceptable you aren't likely to discover the truth of that statement until you're out of a job! So, how to protect yourself? If you aren't able to commit 110% to what you are currently doing, start NOW to find something in which you can.

8. Build your lifestyle around your income, not your expectations.

Recruiters are famous for courting desirable applicants with promises such as: "Why, in two years, you could be making X thousands of RM". The problem is that many new entrants into the job force buy into this line and begin living as though they were making the kind of money promised in two years. A better way is to begin, right with your first job, to structure your lifestyle in such a manner that you can put away ten percent of every paycheck. Starting early and investing regularly and wisely are probably two of the greatest secrets of wealth accumulation.

9. Invest five percent of your time, energy, and money into furthering your career.

In terms of a forty-hour week, that's only two hours per week. The point is, you cannot rely on your employer to spoon feed you. Employers today are oriented towards immediate returns on their dollar. They will invest in you only when they can see an immediate or relatively quick expensive benefit, or when they see extraordinary potential. Better to not count on either. Dedicate yourself to getting ahead by keeping ahead, and you do that be controlling the one thing you can control: your dedication to being the best that you can be.

10. Be willing to change and adapt.

If you re-read the preceding steps in this list, you'll note an absence (refreshing, I hope) of emphasis upon goal-setting and a substitution instead, of words like "values", "skills", "talents", and "preferences". It's not that goals aren't useful, but rather that they should emerge naturally from these other factors and, even though you may write them down and paste them on your mirror, they should not obscure the need to be willing to change and adapt to new conditions, your own growth, and developing opportunities. The distinction here is between "direction" and "plan". An ant has a direction, but not a plan. The ant knows where it wants to go and is willing to turn around, back up, and change course in order to get there. But the ant hasn't written it down, posted it on a bulletin board, or gained concurrence from all the other ants. The ant just knows, with absolute certainty, the general direction in which it's heading and that it WILL get there. That's what modern day career direction is all about.

Young widow's tragic tale

WITH a maturity that belies her age, 21-year-old S. Hema is struggling to feed her family after losing her husband, the family's sole breadwinner recently.

While many of her peers are graduating and preparing to join the workforce, Hema is already a widowed mother of three. The soft-spoken woman who looks barely out of her teens has a lot to contend with right now.

After her 29-year-old husband M. Rattnam met an untimely death after a fall at work in June, Hema has been left with nothing but their three children — Logeswary, seven, Kogilan, four, and Khirthishashiny, one. Rattnam was also providing for his aged mother and younger brother M. Hariharan, 15, who live with the family. With him gone, the family's future is now in limbo.
Hema, who has only five months working experience at a factory in Seremban, is worried that the family would be out on the streets if a solution was not found.

"We are depending on the kindness of strangers to help us get by. Some people like Hariharan's tuition master has gone out of their way to help by waiving his tuition fee. "Unfortunately, the responsibility rests solely on my shoulders as even my in-laws have families and problems of their own," she said. The family of six now lives at a rented home in Taman Chong Loong in Seremban.

Hema estimated that the family's monthly expenditure was about RM1,000 with RM350 going towards rent and the rest for utilities, groceries and other miscellaneous expenses. Hema, who comes from a broken home, married Rattnam when she was only 13.

With her oldest daughter attending school, this young mother wants to do all she can to ensure a bright future for her children. "I hope that no matter what happens, nothing would disrupt their education as it is the only way out," she said. "My father used to buy us everything we asked for and never scolded us. Who's going to do that now?

"I still keep thinking he's going to walk through the door," Logeswary said.

News of the family's plight recently got the attention of the Negri Sembilan Indian Association (NSIA) who have agreed to do their best to ensure the family gets the help it needed. Deputy president James S. Thanjong Tuan said it was part of the association' s efforts to look after the welfare of the Indian community.

RM100mil boost for graduates

The government has earmarked RM100mil this year to improve the employability of students graduating from public higher educational institutions.The money will be spent on several initiatives include training, internships, job placements and entrepreneurship skills development.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said these programmes were introduced to ensure that students not only have paper qualifications but were also competent to enter the job market.“Having a degree alone is not enough in today’s competitive job market.“A graduate must also be competent in addition to having theoretical knowledge,” Khaled said, after opening the Snap-A-Job 2008 career fair recently.

For example, in the information technology field, students undergo an industry-based professional certification programme (3P), which is fully sponsored by the government.Since the programme’s inception in 2006, over 7,000 participants have gone through the course and sat for certification offered by companies like Microsoft, IBM, Sun Microsystems and CompTIA.

“A total of 84% of students who attended the latest course received their professional certification.“This is above the 70% worldwide average.“This is something we can all be proud of,” said Khaled, in his speech.The programme is targeted at final-year students in IT and related fields from selected public universities, polytechnics and community colleges.

This year alone, the government will be spending about RM15mil on 3P.On another matter, Khaled said that Malaysia could not do much about the British government’s move to tighten student visa requirements for foreigners entering the country.These measures include the fingerprinting of students.

“Britain has every right to impose these new conditions based on the issues and problems it is facing,’’ he added.

NEW DELHI: In an abrupt move, the Medical Council of India (MCI) has said that it will not recognise medical degrees offered by India's leading Manipal University, citing lack of clinical facilities and flouting of regulations.

Last week the MCI, a regulatory body of medical institutions, announced its decision not to recognise the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBs) courses offered in the university's Kasturba Medical Colleges in Manipal and Mangalore.

"There were several inadequacies in the college which would not allow students to benefit completely from the course," a senior MCI official was quoted as saying.

But responding to MCI's action, Manipal University's ProChancellor Dr H.S Ballal said that although the MCI had derecognised the institution, the ultimate decision would depend on the Health Ministry.

"We have written to the Health Ministry and they have sent a team to observe the university. They wanted a compliance report from us.

"We have submitted the report and the matter is still pending. We hope to get a reply within two to three weeks. We hope the matter will be resolved in favour of us," Dr Ballal told Bernama.

Manipal is popular among Malaysian students and this year 54 students have enrolled for the MBBS and dentistry courses.

Established in 1953, Kasturba, the first private medical college in India, is among the top 10 medical colleges in the country and has the largest concentration of foreign students, from over 50 countries.

Five government medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh are also on the MCI's black list.

On August 1, 2008, a total solar eclipse will occur as the new moon moves directly between the sun and the earth. The moon’s umbral shadow will fall on parts of Canada, Greenland, the Arctic Ocean, Russia, Mongolia, and China.The first solar eclipse of 2008 occurs at the Moon's ascending node in Capricornus. An annular eclipse will be visible from a wide track, that traverses Antarctica and southern regions of the Pacific Ocean. A partial eclipse will be seen within the much larger path of the Moon's penumbral shadow, which includes the southeastern third of Australia, all of New Zealand and most of Antarctica.

Astronomically speaking, when the sun, the moon and the earth are all in line, with the moon or the earth at the centre, a solar or lunar eclipse takes place respectively.

Hindu Religious View

WHENTHE gods and the demons churned the milky ocean in days of yore, nectar came out
of it. Lord Vishnu assumed the form of Mohini, a charming lady, deluded the demons and distributed the nectar only among the gods. But Rahu had disguised himself as a god. The sun and the moon pointed this out to Mohini who immediately slashed off the demon’s head. Since the nectar had by then already reached up to the neck, he did not die. Thus the head came to be known as Rahu and the body as Ketu. To avenge this betrayal, Rahu and Ketu periodically eclipse the sun and the moon.

At the time of the eclipse, people bathe in the sacred rivers. They do charitable acts. They give cows, money and gold. The day after the eclipse they feed the poor, the Brahmins and the Sadhus. After the eclipse they clean their houses, vessels, etc., and take a bath before they start cooking.One should not take food during the eclipse. When the eclipse begins the food should by then have been digested. One should take food only after seeing the sun or the moon free from the eclipse. When the clear sun or the moon is not seen before sunset or sunrise, in the case of the solar and lunar eclipse respectively, food can be taken only after the sun or the moon is seen the next day.

Pregnant women should not see the sun or the moon during the time of the eclipse. If they do the child born may have some kind of defect. He may be born deaf, dumb or blind. Householders are forbidden from sexual intercourse on the day of the eclipse, for the same reason.At this time one should take great care in avoiding bleeding, scorpion stings, etc. These have disastrous results. Even an earthworm has a poisonous effect when it bites one during an eclipse.Those who do Japa at the time of the eclipse derive great benefits. The effect of Japa and Sankirtan during the eclipse contributes towards relieving the suffering of humanity and also of the planets. These people receive the blessings of the gods. They attain perfection quickly. Those who wish to tap the subtle force locked in the Mantra that will cure scorpion stings should stand in water and repeat the appropriate Mantra.

The little intellect cannot understand many things in this universe. Hence, have faith in the words of sages.Ignorance has eclipsed Self-knowledge. However, this eclipse will disappear. You will shine in your own glory. This is the spiritual significance of the eclipse.

AKTA AUKU 1971

AUKU or normally kwon as Akta Universiti dan Kolej Universiti was formed in 1971. It has been a guideline to all University or College University in setting up their system according to the Ministry higher education department. Ministry of Higher education is an important department where everything about universities from opening a new campus or university to upgrading their courses, and so on must be referred here first before implementing. All final decisions belong to this ministry on either they approve or not. Under this Act there are many sections. It starts from on how to set up an university, University land, Courses, and so on, but what catches our interest is, Act number 15(1) where under AUKU ACT students are not allowed to join any political party or joining any kind of illegal assembly or any organization which is not registered under ministry of education unless they have approval from the Chancellor.

AUKU 15(1) Students Section (original ACT )

Pelajar atau pertubuhan, badan atau kumpulan pelajar
dilarang bersekutu dengan persatuan, dsb. kecuali sebagai
mana diperuntukkan di bawah Perlembagaan, atau
diluluskan oleh Naib Canselor

Perlembagaan atau mana-mana pertubuhan, badan atau kumpulan
pelajar Universiti lain, boleh menyatakan atau berbuat sesuatu
yang boleh ditafsirkan sebagai menyatakan sokongan,
simpati atau bangkangan terhadap mana-mana parti politik atau
kesatuan sekerja atau sebagai menyatakan sokongan atau simpati
dengan mana-mana pertubuhan, badan atau kumpulan orang yang
haram.

(5) Sesiapa jua yang melanggar atau tidak mematuhi
peruntukan subseksyen (1), (2), (3) atau (4) bersalah atas suatu
kesalahan dan boleh, apabila disabitkan, didenda tidak melebihi
satu ribu ringgit atau dipenjarakan selama tempoh tidak melebihi
enam bulan atau kedua-duanya.

So nowadays students especially university and college students want to get a bit freedom of involvement in politics. This is because they are the future leaders. Just imagine, future leaders who are studying in the Universities are clustered by this act. Not only those, under this act, students are not allowed to work nor do anything including social service under political or party name. So this has been a stop to college students to know more about politics. Since after few long years requesting to abolish this law, finally Malaysia Government has accept to abolish this particular act this August after a few meeting with all Cabinet members.

But there are some advantages and disadvantages in this act,

Advantages: Students can engage with any political party activities, but only when working during General elections. Students can invite either opposition party or ruler party’s leader to take part in any university activity or programs. Basically it’s about students who can join political party. Bring more youth in politic, where they can learn to improve themselves to be a good leader.

Disadvantages: I am very much sure that most of student will misuse this freedom by joining illegal demonstration, involving in party convoy where sometimes can be a big mess. Maybe in next general election, our universities will be postured with political party flag & posture.

In my opinion, the abolishment of this Act is a must. It is because we young generation can learn know more about politics and bring up the future one step higher. But at the same time, we younger generation should not misuse the freedom that they give us and in my opinion we should not bring politics in University in any form like sticking political posters, campaign for political parties because the pride of any particular university should always be safeguarded. We should only be given freedom to join or work for any political party.

Unemployment- Education system or Attitude Problem?

Unemployment in Malaysia is problem which has no ending at all. Each and every year we hear the voices of youths hunting for jobs. The unemployment rate is getting higher and higher in Malaysia. Either they don’t get the work that suits their low education level, or they are not interested and feel shy to do any lower level works. So it’s between Ego & Education Level. How about foreign workers who work in Malaysia? Are demands too high for them? Is it because of the cheap rate of the workmanship? How about our Malaysian teenagers who work out side Malaysia?

Malaysia offers a very good and quality education for Malaysia. Malaysian government has set a good education system which works well in all kind of form, even our Degree & Diploma are qualified in other foreign countries. Not only that, the government also approved private universities in Malaysia which pumps our Malaysian education up to a high level. So in my opinion, we don’t have any problem in Education system, but on what course are we choosing usually in college & university. Most of us have a very high ambition on what we want to be. We have set everything in our mind on the first day we entered school, but due to some circumstances we have to face drastic changes which can actually change our life path. Even a small error can ruin our ambition. Nowadays, most of teenagers just take or do any diploma courses or degree courses without thinking whether are there job opportunities in that field, are they qualified for the job, will they be able to do the job and cope up with it. Later after few years, they find out that the opportunities are low, they start to regret on choosing the job. This is why we should come up with 2 plans which is, we still do our favorite course but working it out in other way. For example, Now days we have lots of IT intelligence in our country who most of them don’t have a job, but still we have students who are doing IT courses, maybe they can take teaching courses after the IT courses, or doing own business. To those who don’t have any financial help, they can work out as a free lance ICT technician. So make sure we have back-up plans with us.

Attitude problem, I guess most of us have this problem. We always want the best in our life and it is not wrong but there are some attitudes which make us to waste our precious time. The ego & choosy in selecting a job makes us to wait for long time till we get the job. For example, few case in shah alam, 24 year old teenager, a degree holder, get the job that he wants at the age of 30, till then he was searching the job for almost 6 years which suits with him. 6 long years is just wasted and isn’t it good if he do any other lower level work but at same time look for a better job? In 6 years, he could contribute a bit for his family which spends a lot on him and also he can support his expenses till he get the suitable job. Some times our enemy can be enemy for us. And we should know how to changes our attitude according to the situation. We should not be ego at every time. For example, a after form five student, if we ask him what he want to be, the first thing he will say is, I want to work as clerk, Office Admin, or any other clerical side job even thought now days SPM is just playing small part in students life. Nowdays to be a clerk we need at least diploma with qualified certificate, and also we must master the computer skills. Then only we will be accepted to work. If this forms five students has this king of ego or choosy attitude, how about the university students and so more??

MIC fund for kidney patient

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC Youth Social and Welfare Bureau is setting up a fund for kidney patient P. Sivasakthi, 54, to undergo an operation in India.

The Sivasakthi Fund was launched yesterday by wing head, T. Mohan, who wants to collect the RM70,000 for the operation within three months.

The operation is being done in India because of the shorter waiting period there. Sivasakthi's husband N. Jeyapragasam, 57, said he had used his Employees' Provident Fund for his own medical bills, which come up to RM800 a month. The couple need RM3,000 a month for their medical bills.

Their two sons are supporting the couple but with a total income of RM2,400, it is difficult for them to continue doing so.

Govt approves RM120m for Indian community

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government has approved a RM120mil allocation for the development of the Indian community for four years following a request by the MIC.

MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the RM30mil allocation each year would be used to help single mothers become self sufficient as well as for youth programmes and other programmes to help the needy.

"Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi gave the approval recently," he told reporters Saturday after the end of the one-day MIC general assembly here.

He said that the allocation was part of the RM300mil sought from the Government in May to help poor Malaysian Indians.

The assembly went smoothly without any untoward incidents as Samy Vellu was in his element, ticking off delegates as well as cracking jokes. He also urged the branch chairmen to read the various booklets and use them as "ammunition" to answer the party's critics.

Several delegates touched on education, economy, employment and party unity while some spoke on the need for the president to continue to lead the party.

Former MIC deputy president Datuk S. Subramaniam, who also spoke, called on members to forget their differences and work together towards strengthening the party.

"I am saddened with the party's loss in the elections. We have to find the weaknesses and rectify them," he said, adding that the MIC was a strong party.

Subramaniam said the party did not take heed of the activities of the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) as they were deemed to be fighting for the rights of the Hindu religion.

"But they (Hindraf) were hijacked by the Opposition and they fell for it, requesting the people vote for the Opposition. This was a big disappointment to us," he said, adding that the challenge is to bring them to the MIC fold.

He also praised Samy Vellu for not giving up but continuing to work for the betterment of the Indian community.

The assembly passed five resolutions. One of the resolutions expressed support for Abdullah’s leadership as PM.

The MIC also urged the Federal Government to establish representative committees at the state and district levels to serve the people in the five Opposition-held states.

This was necessary, as MIC has no representation at the state and local governments in Selangor, Perak, Kedah, Penang and Kelantan.

In another resolution, MIC urged the Government to monitor the delivery and implementation mechanisms in order to achieve the targets within the specified time frame and to allocate sufficient funds and personnel.

The party also called on the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry to set up enforcement squads to monitor the prices in rural areas and to prosecute retailers and shopkeepers found to have raised prices without approval.

PM announces steps to enhance education among Malaysian Indians

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Saturday announced immediate steps to enhance education among Malaysian Indian students, either at school or university level.

He said among others, the Government had agreed to turn more capital-aided Tamil schools, many of which are in the rural areas, into fully-aided schools.

"The Government will also speed up the process of merging and consolidating the Tamil schools that have less than 50 students," he said in his speech when opening the 62nd MIC Annual General Meeting at the Dewan Merdeka, Putra World Trade Centre here.

Abdullah said the Government also agreed that students from the MIC-run Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology (AIMST) University in Kedah would be allowed to apply for scholarships from the Public Services Department.

The move would make AIMST University the fifth private university to enjoy such a facility after institutions like the Monash University, Swinburne University and the University of Nottingham, among others.

MIC Youth bureau to recruit 50,000 new members

KUALA LUMPUR: MIC Youth has set up a special bureau to recruit 50,000 new members within a year, its newly-appointed coordinator T. Mohan said.

In his maiden speech at the MIC Youth annual general assembly here, Mohan said there would be several changes in the movement to ensure it was effective and efficient.

“We should realise that we are small and should not be disunited in any situation. We must voice our views as one through the right channels to protect the rights of the community,” he said.

For the first time, the Putera MIC, which has 3,200 members, also joined in the MIC Youth meeting.Mohan was appointed MIC Youth coordinator on Monday to replace S.A. Vigneswaran, who had resigned as the movement's leader.

He said the Youth wing would organise youth carnivals to publicise the MIC's programmes.“We will also give priority to tackling social ills like crime, drug abuse, domestic violence and gangsterism.

“We will also set up a task force to handle the problems of those not having birth certificates and identity cards, which is a major problem in the Indian community,” Mohan said.He said two full-time officers would be stationed at the MIC Youth office to provide support to the youth leaders in the country.

Yesterday, the wing unanimously passed 10 resolutions, including calling for the abolishment of interviews for the award of Public Services Department scholarships.It also called on the Government to take concrete measures to set up a planning and implementation body in the Economic Planning Unit to ensure the 3% equity target for Indians is reached before 2020.

The wing also called for the setting up of a RM300mil youth entrepreneurs capital fund to assist Indians to participate in economic activities and approve a licence for the setting up of a bank for the community.

Samy Vellu slams former protege

KUALA LUMPUR: Former MIC Youth chief S.A. Vigneswaran was good at chairing meetings but failed to come up with clear programmes and policies to uplift Indian youths, said party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu yesterday.

In his first attack after his former protege asked him to step down, Samy Vellu said Vigneswaran had failed in his responsibilities, as there were more cases of Indian youths involved in juvenile problems and murders reported in the newspapers.

“He (Vigneswaran) should have focused his attention on the problems faced by the Indian youth apart from resolving the problems within the MIC Youth,” he told reporters after the joint opening of the MIC Wanita, Youth, Puteri and Putera MIC wings' annual general assembly.

Vigneswaran, who was asked to relinquish his Youth chief post after having passed the age limit of 41 years, announced his resignation from the party on June 29.

He had said that he would only rejoin the party after Samy Vellu steps down as the president.Samy Vellu said that he would not be cowed by threats from people who want to disrupt his functions in the various states.

“I know who is behind this. It is coming from Selangor. We are not be afraid of their sandiwara,” he said, adding that elected leaders were required to work for the community.He said that he had picked Vigneswaran from the streets, appointed him to the youth chief's post and recommended him to contest for a parliamentary seat and made him a parliamentary secretary.

Samy Vellu said Vigneswaran was now the loser as he could have waited and contested for a higher post in the party elections.Earlier in his speech, Samy Vellu said certain leaders of the party's youth wing were only interested in achieving their political ambitions through cheap publicity.

“These leaders refuse to thrash out matters involving the party and the community through discussions but prefer to engage in cheap publicity stunts that could only damage and weaken the party.”

He said the 41-year age limit was imposed to provide more opportunities to capable and eligible younger generations to serve in various capacities in the youth wing at the divisional and state level.

“Saya juga bertekad untuk berusaha memastikan masyarakat India supaya bersatu. Populasi kita tidak harus berpecah belah dalam apa jua situasi untuk mempertahankan martabat bangsa India,” katanya ketika berucap dalam Perhimpunan Agung Pemuda MIC di sini, semalam.

Mohan, bekas calon Dewan Undangan Negeri kawasan Batu Caves pada pilihan raya umum 8 Mac lalu, diberi peranan baru itu selepas Vigneswaran keluar parti berikutan arahan berundur kerana melepasi usia 41 tahun seperti disyaratkan dalam perlembagaan parti.

Mohan yang juga pengerusi Biro Kebajikan dan Sosial Pemuda MIC, memberi jaminan akan menumpukan kepada masalah sosial yang serius di kalangan masyarakat India seperti ketiadaan sijil kelahiran, kad pengenalan, kad pengenalan merah, jenayah, dadah dan bunuh diri.

“Saya cadangkan supaya kerajaan menubuhkan unit bertindak khas bagi mengatasi masalah kad pengenalan merah,” katanya

Businessman Mohan heads MIC Youth

KUALA LUMPUR: T. Mohan, the MIC Youth social and welfare bureau chief, has been appointed the party's youth coordinator.

This follows the decision of the MIC Central Working Committee (CWC) to ask all youth leaders who have reached the age of 41 to vacate their posts.

Mohan, 35, a businessman, will have lawyer S. Muruge-san as his deputy. Murugesan was the Youth wing's representative to the CWC, the party's highest decision-making body.

MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said Mohan and his team would take the advice of the MIC Youth Advisory Council, headed by former Kahang state assemblyman S. Ramis, in carrying out activities until the MIC Youth elections next year.

Mohan had stood on a Barisan Nasional ticket in the Batu Caves state constituency in the March 8 general election while Murugesan was the BN candidate for the Subang parliamentary seat. Both did not win the seats.

He said the party leadership was reorganising the wing in line with the constitutional requirement of the party. He said Mohan and Murugesan's first task was to organise the MIC Youth's annual general assembly on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Klang MIC division chief has denied that he was instigated by former MIC Youth chief S.A. Vigneswaran to criticise Samy Vellu.Alex Thiagarasan said the accusation was baseless.
He said his criticisms were due to negative developments in the party.

Following his attacks on the party chief in the media, Thiagarasan has been issued a show-cause letter and will face the disciplinary committee tomorrow.

Among the key decisions or those agreed in principle by the government at the cabinet committee include:

- To convert 372 partially-aided Tamil schools into fully-assisted schools.

- Consolidate schools which had an enrollment of less than 50 students.

- To ensure at least eight percent of Indian representation at all levels in the civil service. To achieve that, it will also see more promotions for Indian civil servants.

- The MIC-run Asian Institute for Medicine, Science and Technology (Aimst) to be re-categorized as one of the five private universities which recognize government-sponsored students to boost the intake of Indian students into critical sectors like medicine and engineering. At present, students who receive government scholarship were only given a list of choice of universities which does not include Aimst.

- To allow Indian contractors to take part in government projects at all levels. For government's mega projects, it is suggested that certain sub-contract jobs be given to Indian contractors.

- Indian entrepreneurs to be given more opportunities in the development of vendor development scheme through companies like state-owned oil firm Petronas and national car-maker Proton.

- Easier access to government loans for Indian entrepreneurs.

- More taxi and bus permits for Indian companies.

- To increase the Indian corporate equity from the current 1.1 percent to 1.5 percent in 2010. To do this, the government is planning to set up a unit trust scheme based on the Permodalan Nasional Berhad model to allow Indians to invest in the scheme to increase their equity in the market.

A couple of days ago, The Star published an article entitled, “Bus schools roll into Indian slums”. The article was bout India’s next attempt to educate all children from 6 to 14 years old which was at times against the resistance of parents. Their plan is simple but it’s very effective on bringing the interest of the poor children to study. The idea is simply, send a yellow bus exactly like a school bus which attracts the interest of others seeing it. Since they have painted it in yellow, they believe that it can direct sight towards the bus. A team of Social workers & teachers will spend more then 2 hours in cities where the number of the non-educated children is high. They play educational games & give some foods for the children. Basically they plan is, Go-Stop- and Create the interest for studying among children– move to another place. It’s simply to bring a big awareness among the India citizen. This is so that they send their children to school including the poor ones as wellIn Tamil Nadu India, they have produced and advertisement called “ Padicha than hero, illathi zero” whereby in the advertisement the popular actors explains the importance of the education specially early childhood education and it seems to be a highly effective idea because most of Tamil Nadu people of all ages are addicted to movies & actors. As we know, most of T.Nadu citizen will keep one of the actors as a role model for them. Thus advertisement also brings a good respond’s among T.nadu people.

In Malaysia, the number of less educated children is less just then 10%. This is because as Malaysia citizen, we know that education is the most important asset. But yet, we have some parents who don’t know the importance of education. The numbers of dropout Indian students are higher nowadays and a survey has been done to evaluate their eagerness to study, Most of them said, Its hard study with book and to remember facts. Is this really because of the low mentality level or laziness of the student to study? Even Malaysian government has provide us with vocational school to those who hard to face book to study. Apart from that, Malaysian government has introduced MLVK Course for dropout students. After their MLVK course, they can continue studies in diploma and so on.

So since there are a lot of alternative ways in our education system, why Indian students specially school dropout students don’t take the alternative way to continue their studies? What really caused them to hate studies? What kind of action or plan that we as Indian Teenagers and Malaysian citizens should take to tell the importance of the education for them? I’m very much sure that we don’t want our Indian student end up as gangsters, robbers, & drug addicts. Let’s don’t accuse others on this matter, let’s ask this matter to ourselves.

KUALA LUMPUR: A new cabinet committee has been formed to look into the welfare of Indians, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said last night.
He said the committee, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, would meet on Monday.Among the issues to be discussed were the standard of living of the Indian community and ways to improve and upgrade their lifestyles.At a press conference after chairing the Barisan Nasional supreme council meeting, Abdullah said the setting up of the committee was part of the Mid-Term Review of the Ninth Malaysia Plan. He said another committee would also be set up to look into the development of rural folk in Sabah and Sarawak, adding that representatives of BN component parties would be invited to sit on the committee.

THE MIC-owned Maju Institute of Educational Development (MIED) has launched a scholarship scheme to assist Malaysian Indian students who are unsuccessful in getting scholarships.
MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said that scholarships would be offered to those who have excellent results in the SPM and STPM examinations.“We will give priority to those who had submitted their results for the annual President’s Merit Award,” he said.

According to Samy Vellu, only 50 out of the 192 students who had appealed to the Public Services Department (PSD), through MIED, for scholarships, were successful.“We will absorb the 142 unsuccessful students into our scholarship scheme to enable them to pursue foundation studies in science or business at AIMST University in Sungai Petani, Kedah,” he said, adding that students who scored 10 1As and above would be awarded full scholarships whilst those with 9 1As and 8 1As would be awarded 60% and 50% fee waivers, respectively, to pursue foundation courses in science.“There are also about 100 full scholarships for students who wish to pursue foundation studies in business,” he said.

This scheme will help more Indian students further their studies.Samy Vellu had earlier presented trophies, certificates and cash awards to 374 students who scored 8 1As and above in the SPM examinations, and 37 students who had 4As and above in the STPM examinations last year.“By honouring these high achievers, we hope to motivate them and build up their self-esteem and confidence,” he said.

MIC, through MIED, has honoured 2,074 students who have done well in the SPM and STPM examinations between 2000 and 2007.

MIC to approve fewer student loans

KUALA LUMPUR: The Maju Institute of Educational Development (MIED), MIC's education arm, has been receiving more applications for student loans, but the number of approvals is likely to be reduced due to financial constraints caused by defaulters.
MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said although non-performing loans had been reduced to 17 per cent, the fact that other students were being denied access to these funds remained an urgent matter for MIED. Besides legal action against defaulters, Samy Vellu said the loan programme had been restructured by allocating funds on a yearly basis and not for the duration of the course. For instance, if a student pursued a three-year course, MIED would allocate funds for the first year only. Money for the remaining two years would depend on the student's academic performance and additional funds provided by the student's family.

He said this after presenting MIED loans to 185 applicants, amounting to RM1.5 million at the MIC headquarters yesterday. Of the 185, 90 will pursue medicine.He said since the loan programme was established in the 1980s, about RM90 million had been disbursed to 8,500 students to pursue tertiary education. On the recent public university intake, he reminded Indian students who failed to secure a seat to submit their appeal to the MIC by June 26.The party had requested for an eight per cent intake for Indian students, but had to settle for 6.84 per cent this year.
